15 Fascinating Stories That Could Happen Only in Summer

Curiosities

In childhood, we felt summer especially acutely because school days were replaced by long-awaited holidays. But even as adults, we still live our little life in summer. We grill kebabs, swim in the sea, pick berries, weed the vegetable garden... In general, we experience a lot of wonderful things.

  • I was in Thailand once. I went to rent a bike, and the owner was a friendly guy from India. We got to talking about where we were from.
I complimented his country, saying that they have an interesting culture. I remembered my childhood when my friends and I used to go watch Indian movies. He was so surprised!
And here we are standing in the middle of the street in Thailand, 2 people of different nationalities from different parts of the world, and yelling at the top of our lungs, "Jimmy, Jimmy, aaja, aaja!" I got the first 24 hours of the rent for free. © Success & Failure / VK
  • I work as a kitchen manager for a rural school district in the US. Over the summer, for June and July, myself, alongside to colleagues, ran a food truck that stopped at 4 schools for half an hour each to distribute free meals. The 2 months flew by. I had dozens of heartfelt conversations with little folks across town.
Most notably, a little girl was just overjoyed one day because we had fresh apples. She told me that, “They don’t have fresh fruit in her house.”
From that conversation forward, I made sure to serve a fresh piece of whole fruit with every meal. It got to the point that we were sending my boss to the local grocery because nobody had really budgeted for fresh. It felt good to do something so small but make a little person so happy.
Over 2 months, we served 18,406 meals to children in our community. They didn’t pay a dime, and watching all the families come together to eat and play. Seeing them all leap up in excitement when my truck turned the corner. I didn’t expect to be a 39-year-old lunch lady, but today I sure am glad this is where I ended up. © MyPoorChequebook / Reddit
  • There are 6 of us in the office. It's 86°F outside, but our 2 coworkers are stubborn, "We freeze from the air conditioning." We tried to negotiate, offered them to swap places.
The other day we came to work, and there was no remote control for the air conditioner! One of the freezing girls had hidden it. We demanded it back, but she wouldn't give it back. I found the remote control, switched it on, they pulled it out of the socket and threw a tantrum.
In the end, one of those who can't stand the heat became ill, she has hypertension, her blood pressure spiked. We called an ambulance, they took this coworker to hospital with a blood pressure over 200. The bosses found out about our wars for a comfortable temperature.
The manager offered these 2 to move, they refused. They said, "These are our desks, they are conveniently located, we will not move." The manager got mad and moved these 2 to another office. It's partly located in the corridor, there is a small window and no air conditioning, and everyone walks by. © Overheard / Ideer

“Summer in my grandmother’s village”

  • When I was 16, our class went on a tour to another city. I decided to look my best and put on new high heel shoes, even though I knew I would be on my feet all day. After a couple of hours, I wanted to die, but my pride didn’t let me admit that I was a fool.
I walked, gritting my teeth in pain and whimpering quietly until my 2 friends looked at me with pity, pulled off my shoes and took off their sneakers. In the end, the 3 of us stomped barefoot on the pavement. Friendship is not a pretty word, but the warm tarmac under your feet. © Chamber 6 / VK
  • In summer I was with my daughter in the park, we were walking, eating ice cream. We sat on a bench, and suddenly my daughter noticed a girl crying. She asked me, “Mom, why is that girl crying? Why is everyone cheerful, and she is so sad?”
I couldn’t answer this question, and then my daughter said, “Can you buy me an ice cream? I’ll treat her, cheer her up!” I told her that maybe the girl wanted to be alone, maybe she didn’t need ice cream right now, but my daughter didn’t listen to me.
She went to buy ice cream herself, went over to that girl, and sat down next to her. They talked for about 5 minutes, smiled at the end, came over to me together. The girl wiped her tears and said, “You have a wonderful daughter, a month with a psychologist didn’t help me as much as she did in 5 minutes!” © Chamber 6 / VK

“I cut the first giant onion.”

  • Once we received an email from our bosses saying that very important guests are expected tomorrow, investors who will be hanging around the office. So, everyone needs to clean up their desks and dress decently.
Designer Sam didn’t read the email, and the next day he came in comfortable clothes. Since it was summer, he was dressed in a sleeveless mesh T-shirt, shorts with fringe and flip-flops. It was 5 minutes before the guests’ arrival, and that’s when the director saw Sam. His hair stood on end:
    — Sam, come on! We’ll talk later, leave the office and hang out somewhere for a couple of hours!
    — Where should I go?
    — I don’t know! Have a coffee somewhere!
    — Boss, I have no money to drink coffee for.
    — Take the money and get out of here!
We, ironed and combed, looked enviously at the relaxed Sam leaving the office. © Anecdotes from life from anecdotes.net / VK

“Found this photo in my childhood album. Summer is fun, they said. Chicken pox was obviously not fun.”

“My watermelon just exploded, now my kitchen has juice everywhere.”

“This gray ladybug with heart-shaped spots appeared on my balcony today.”

  • I went to Turkey with a friend and her husband to unwind. I was going through a difficult break-up, and I needed nothing more than just to sit by the sea and cry. And then my friend’s husband met a group of guys in a bar.
Eventually, I started a vacation fling with one of them. He wooed me very nicely. We exchanged contacts, I was absolutely sure he’d come to me. Or I would come to him.
When we flew back, my friend’s husband confessed that this handsome man was married with 3 children. They knew it all along, they just wanted me to relax.
So I didn’t answer his messages and dropped his calls. And what was my surprise when a year later I saw the guy’s wedding photos. I texted, congratulated him.
It turned out that this is his first marriage, no children. And he thought of me as a hysterical girl who didn’t even explain the reason for her behavior. We both want to rewind everything back, but it’s too late. And why did my friends do this? © Overheard / VK

“My arms vs my legs”

“I rode my bike into the forest. As soon as I learned that there are such machines and you can even try them out, I went straight to the lake.”

  • Out of the blue, my husband gives me a trip, “Go to the sea, you’re exhausted.” I was surprised, but I went. So there I am, sitting on the beach, when he suddenly posts a photo: a dinner table... and a woman’s hand next to the plate!
That was it, he’d gone too far. I fly back, burst into the apartment — and there’s my husband... with my cousin, whom I hadn’t seen in 10 years!
Turns out they were planning a surprise: I’d come home, and they’d go, “Surprise!” I just stood there like an idiot. Later, I said I knew it was her hand in the photo and rushed back because I missed her so much. Epic failure. © Mamdarinka / VK
