15 True Stories With Mind-Blowing Endings That Could Rival Hollywood

Every once in a while, life throws us something so odd, so perfectly timed, or so completely unexplainable that it feels scripted. From eerie coincidences to once-in-a-lifetime encounters, people online have shared stories that are so strange, they make fiction look ordinary.

  • After graduating in 2004, I really struggled to break out of the high school mentality of having a set group of friends to hang out with. So, when I started working at Home Depot around 2005, a guy I worked with named Nick invited me out. I was only 19 at the time, but he was a few years older. We ended up becoming very good friends, but we never really opened up to each other about anything other than girls. Fast forward a few months, and my stepmom’s mother passed away. It was a pretty bleak time, and I really only had my family to talk to, which, of course, wasn’t the same at all. I was struggling, and my buddy Nick was drifting away as well. The day of the funeral came. Toward the end, I walked up to say my final goodbyes and saw Nick staring at me, dumbfounded. We high-fived and hugged. We found out that he’s my stepmom’s nephew, and we had both been drifting away because we didn’t have anyone to talk to about serious things (outside of family). We’ve been best friends ever since. © talexsmith / Reddit
  • I dated a guy who was a hotshot from a wealthy family. He turned abusive over time after we moved in together. He was cheating on me, and the other woman showed up on my doorstep and told me everything because she’d just found out about me. She helped me pack, and I left. I had a job I liked, but it didn’t pay well, so I couch-surfed while I saved. My boss was a goofy but kind guy who tried to help me open up, but I wouldn’t budge. One day, I got really sick and went to the hospital. I was rushed into surgery for an intestinal blockage that had apparently been there for a while. I texted my boss to let him know that I wouldn’t be back that day because I was going into surgery. When I woke up, my boss was sitting there with flowers. Those walls came down at light speed. Fast forward through a whirlwind romance, and I’m now married to him and the happiest I’ve ever been. © Petite-Omahkatayo / Reddit
  • The little town where I grew up had two car dealerships, one selling Chevys and the other selling Fords, located on opposite sides of town. They were bitter rivals. There were attack ads, salesmen who talked smack, and billboard fights. When the owner of the Chevrolet dealership died, it came out that he had also owned the Ford dealership through a shell company. No one saw that coming, including many of the higher-ups who worked at the dealerships. © ronearc / Reddit
  • On my first day, I started a new job. I walked up to a guy and introduced myself. He said, “No time to waste,” and assigned me a few odd tasks, which I started on. An hour into the job, my phone rang. It was the job I had just started. I answered, and the guy on the phone said, “You are aware that today is your first day?” I said, “Yes, I’m actually here. David gave me some stuff to do.” The guy on the phone asked, “Who’s David?” Apparently, a complete stranger had just started telling me what to do, and I hadn’t thought twice about it. We had a pretty good laugh. © Unknown author / Reddit
  • I was looking for a job in my early 20s. I arrived at a job interview, but the man didn’t know I was coming. He begrudgingly walked me into his office and started asking me questions. I had been to so many interviews that I wasn’t in the mood for someone to make me feel unwelcome. When he asked me why I wanted to work there, I said, “I like to help people.” He responded with “Yeah, right.” I was surprised, but I could tell that the interview was going nowhere.

The rest of the interview is a formality, and I conclude with a sarcastic, “Sorry to bother you.” When I got back to my apartment, I felt down. Then, I receive a voicemail asking where I was for my interview. The message says that if I am still interested, I should call back. After comparing the name, number, and company on the business card I was given, I realized I was on the wrong floor. I had just walked into a random company and been given an interview. Needless to say, I didn’t get either job. © adverb_adjective / Reddit
  • I graduated from law school and got engaged to the girl I had been with throughout university. We applied to the same graduate program and ended up working together in the same office in Canberra. Three months before our wedding, I found out that she was cheating on me with our mutual boss. I broke off the engagement. Long story short, things got ugly, and the two of us ended up in a bitter court case over property.

Canberra is a small city, and the legal community there is even smaller. Everywhere I went, I bumped into my ex. It was seriously getting me down, so I applied for an overseas development job with the Australian government in Tuvalu, a Pacific island with a population of about 11,000. It’s a prestigious position, with only two offered on a rotating basis for a two-year contract.

I was successful and moved to the island to start my posting. To discover that my ex was the other successful applicant. So I spent the next two years sharing a tiny office on a tiny island with someone I quite honestly loathe more than anyone else in the world. © larriedbutmooking / Reddit
  • My first “run-in” with a student occurred during my student teaching. One day, while substituting for a teacher on jury duty, I asked a young woman to stay after class. She seemed fuming the whole hour, so I asked if everything was okay. She told me that she just wanted to graduate and leave high school. She asked, “Can I go now?” I was taken aback and said, “Sure.” She angrily walked out. Thirty-six years later, we stopped and chatted on a trail at 6,000 feet in northern Idaho and discovered our connection. We’ve been married for four years now. © mattaccino / Reddit
  • When I first started in my field, I was falsely accused of plagiarism by someone named “X,” whom I had never met or heard of. The accusation was bizarre and unfounded, so I politely denied it in a written response and moved on with my life and work. Some years later, a publisher approached me, asking me to write a book as a subject matter expert. I agreed, and the process moved forward. The publisher said they wanted the book to be co-authored with someone else. Can you guess who? Yes, X. I replied to the publisher, saying that I would love to do the project. However, since X had falsely accused me of plagiarism and had clearly mistrusted me, I wasn’t willing to work with them professionally. The publisher agreed. X was dropped, and the publisher gave me the entire book deal. My book went on to sell tens of thousands of copies and receive rave reviews. X hasn’t produced any work in the field for over a year. © Unknown author / Reddit
  • As far as I understood, my grandfather was always a fairly reserved and distant father. He fit the stereotype of a northern dockworker who came home expecting dinner on the table, then went to the pub all evening via the bookies. An unsurprising heart attack later, here we are, gathered for his funeral. We’re a big but close-knit family, so we all knew each other, including his friends. However, a man about the same age as my dad and his siblings showed up that nobody knew. Long story short, it turns out he was my grandfather’s son. From another family. From another marriage. This went on for as long as my grandfather’s marriage to my grandmother. My grandfather maintained two marriages for over 40 years. He had seven children with my grandmother and just one with this other woman. They knew about our family and kept their distance. Apparently, my grandmother knew about them but kept quiet. As it turns out, he wasn’t going to the pub every night. © achybreakyb***s / Reddit
  • I worked at a gas station for a while. My boss told me that when he wasn’t there, I was in charge. Oh, yeah! So, when I received a phone call asking for the boss, I naturally said that I was the boss. Bad idea. It just so happened that the caller had a difficult-to-understand Indian accent. I couldn’t understand him, so I just kept saying “yes,” “sure,” and “fine.” Which I probably shouldn’t have done. Eight months later, my boss received a call saying that he owed $600 for eight months of medical insurance that he had signed up for. As soon as he asked if I had ever answered the phone for an Indian salesman, I knew I was in trouble. He didn’t fire me or charge me $600, but I did get chewed out, and he never let it go. He still talks about it. © onizuon / Reddit
  • My mother told me that my brother, Jeffrey, who was two years older than me, died two weeks after birth. Anyway, I met a guy in the lobby of the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. We hit it off really well. We both loved Doctor Who and wanted to become physicists. The only problem was that he was 22 and I was 20. We introduced ourselves and exchanged phone numbers. A couple of days later, we went on a date to dinner. He told me that he had been adopted by a family when he was only a couple of weeks old. I told him that my older brother had died around the same age. He asked for my brother’s name, which I politely gave him. He started to sweat and looked worried. We went back to my house to call my parents. They said to do a blood test. The very next day, we went to the doctor, and it turned out that I had dated my brother. © odins_sleep / Reddit
  • I knew a woman who was going through a divorce with her husband. He was always argumentative toward her, certainly always shouting and demeaning her. Then, just as the divorce was entering its final stages, he suddenly passed away. The autopsy revealed that he had an undiagnosed brain tumor that had physically altered his personality. © Torien0 / Reddit
  • A few years ago, I was invited to a friend’s engagement party. They were throwing a huge party because they were planning a small destination wedding. Later in the evening, my friend’s fiancé took the microphone and started thanking everyone for being there. “Sorry, Jen will be out to thank you guys in a minute. She’s just having a wardrobe malfunction.” He went on to tell the story of how they met, became best friends, and got engaged. He finished by saying, “We wish you could all be there, and we wish we could get married right now. So, we’re going to.” Out walked Jen in her wedding dress. © RockG / Reddit
  • I was a Starbucks barista before the “names on cups” trend took off (or at least, it wasn’t widely practiced in my small store). There was a very cute guy who came in four to six times a week. That was a little often, but nothing out of the ordinary. I flirted like mad. He flirted back. It was all great. Then he came in with his fiancée. I felt betrayed and treated him coldly from then on. A month later, they came in together, and I found out that they are twins. I had shot down any chance I had with the single one. © mindovermacabre / Reddit
  • While studying abroad in England, I planned a weekend trip to Barcelona with a girl. This was before cellphones existed. I overslept. I got to the airport three hours late. As soon as I arrived, there she was. At the same time, we both said, “I am so sorry! Wait, what are you sorry for?” It turns out she had also overslept. British Airways changed our tickets for free, and we arrived in Barcelona a few hours late. © moak0 / Reddit
