18 DIY Projects That Started as Simple Ideas and Ended Up Extraordinary

Who knew a real bread could be a glowing lamp or a torn sofa could be “healed” in such a way that people would say, “Some ’creative artsy’ furniture company could sell it for tens of thousands of dollars.” These 18 talents prove—you don’t need a huge budget to make something truly amazing—just use your imagination.

1. Falling in love with the dog I felted 😍

  • False. This is a real, tiny, pocket shiba.

2. Fixed a ripped knee on my daughter’s school jeans.

3. Spring camper pincushion. I just love taking photos of my creations, that is my special kind of therapy!

  • This is so cute that I immediately assumed it was AI. Now I’m in cute aggression.

4. I made this, but a family member said she doesn’t like it and wouldn’t wear it. That gaslighted me so bad into overthinking it now.

  • If I saw someone wearing this, my first thought would be, “OMG, that person is COOL.”

5. African flower beetles

6. My inspiration for this show was my son, Elijah. He has Autism, ADHD, and is still considered nonverbal. I wanted it to reflect what autism is to us, and to show it in a more intimate light.

“This piece reflects the isolation someone with nonverbal autism can have. Since Elijah does not have full verbal communication yet, it creates a barrier with other children. He cannot yet share his interests, he doesn’t understand the rules of made-up games, and he struggles with social skills. Often, kids misinterpret his silence for disinterest or rudeness. Many kids like Elijah are lost in translation.”

7. Prom dress. I tried to create something that feels like movement. Somewhere between flames and petals, flowing across the body instead of just sitting on it.

8. I made this cute set. It took like a month. Honeycomb necklace and bee earrings—2,000 beads! 🐝

9. “Made this for my studio door. It freaks people who walk by.”

  • Put an oscillating fan behind it, and maybe it’ll move enough to freak people out more.

10. A coffee table I made from a $12 piece of plywood. I do some amateur woodworking every once in a while when I have time, and this piece took me multiple tries to be strong enough and aesthetically pleasing.

  • How dare you derail capitalism by making your own table?

11. I made a stained glass mirror!

12. Over the last year, I’ve started making lights with real toasted bread.

13. My wife likes to meditate on her paddleboard, so I made her a meditation platform.

  • When you just need life to leaf you alone for a while.

14. Spilled beverage bookmark

  • This is so smart it’s like, “How has no one made this before?!”

15. Gloves from my husband’s Grandma

  • Obsessed with the construction of this. Can we slap a GoPro on g-ma to see how she did it?

16. I transformed this blank wall into a forest wall! 😬

  • Wow, this instantly makes the space feel so alive... such a cool and creative transformation! You nailed it!!!

17. Undoing the cat’s masterpiece. And sharing some learnings.

  • This is probably the most lovely restoration of cat damage on furniture that I’ve ever seen ♥️

18. A before and after of the saddest plushie I’ve ever found.

  • Me in the morning vs me after getting ready.

If you could commission any of these 18 creators to make a custom piece just for you, which one would you hire first?
