Hair dye contains over 5,000 chemicals to make it possible for you to achieve good results. Coloring is an invasive process and goes against your hair’s nature, which means you need to be extra careful before, during, and after you do it. A platinum blond or a vivid red hue may look great on you but to make it last a while and keep your hair healthy, there are some things that are worth doing and things that should be avoided at all costs.

Bright Side will now reveal 5 things you can do to keep your hair healthier and make your color last longer and 5 things that are making your color fade.

Maintaining your hair color

1. After coloring your hair, put off the first wash as much as you can.

After coloring your hair, it’s good to try and wait at least 2 days before you wash it for the first time. This is because the hair is still very sensitive after the coloring process and if you wash it, it can fade much quicker.

2. Use the right hair masks.

Don’t forget to put a hair mask on your hair. Hair masks will help strengthen and nurture your hair and prepare it for the next time you color it.

3. Use UV-protection and try to hide your hair from the sun.

Use products with UV-protection as the sun can be your worst enemy and the heat can make your color go away. Try to look for kinds that can last a long time in your hair.

4. Rinse your hair with cool water.

Rinsing your hair with cooler water will keep it healthy and shiny. Washing it with hot water will open the cuticles of your hair, resulting in dry strands and faded color.

5. Use color-safe dry shampoo on the days you’re not washing your hair.

Wash your hair as little as possible. You may have actually seen the color coming out in the water while washing it. On the days you don’t wash it, use a color-safe dry shampoo as it will help keep your hair nice and shiny.

Things that can ruin your hair color

1. Not using conditioner

Deep conditioning is a must after you color your hair. That’s because your locks lose a lot of moisture during the coloring process. If you don’t use conditioner, your hair will become dry and lose its shine and color.

2. Using heat-styling tools

Dyeing your hair and straightening it with heat-styling tools is not a good combination. Heated tools will make your hair color fade and it takes only 5 seconds of using the tool to see changes. This happens because people set their irons to 400 degrees, and such high temperatures affect your color straight away and can downgrade your hair to a lighter color.

3. Swimming in pools with chlorine

Hair dyes are made with chemicals so they’re bound to react with other chemicals such as the chlorine present in swimming pools. Chlorine can work as a bleaching agent and make your color turn to a lighter shade, and eventually, it’ll fade.

4. Using products with salt, sulfates, and detergents

You need to make sure you use products that are chemical-free or that have the least amount possible. Using such products will strip all the color out, as their function is to chemically clean everything, including your dyed hair color.

5. Scrubbing your hair while drying it

Scrubbing your hair can be really damaging, especially when you dye it. Scrubbing will weaken your hair and affect the color. Instead, wrap your hair with a microfiber towel and let it dry.
