Christina Applegate Plans to Change Her Career Path After Her Diagnosis
Over her 4-decade-long career, movie and TV veteran Christina Applegate has won the hearts of audiences with her famous roles in Married With Children, Anchorman, Bad Moms, and most recently in the dark comedy, Dead to Me, which earned her a 2023 SAG Award nomination.
While commenting on the nomination, Applegate worried fans by saying that this award show might be her last: “It’s my last award show as an actor probably, so it’s kind of a big deal.” She added that, at the moment, she doesn’t feel physically strong enough, explaining, "Right now, I couldn’t imagine getting up at 5 a.m. and spending 12 to 14 hours on a set; I don’t have that in me at this moment.’’
The 51-year-old actress was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2021 while shooting the last season of the hit Netflix show. ’’I couldn’t walk. They had to use a wheelchair to get me to set. I was freaking out until someone was like ’you need an MRI,’’’ she explained in an interview.
Being the true professional that she is, Applegate insisted on continuing to film the rest of the final season of the show despite her health problems and challenges. However, she later admitted that she didn’t watch season 3 because of all the physical and emotional changes she went through. ’’I don’t like seeing myself struggling,’’ she explained.
Earlier this year, Applegate was nominated for a Critics Choice Award for her portrayal of Jen Harding in Dead to Me. The actress appeared at the ceremony with her daughter, Sadie, which was her first red-carpet event since the diagnosis.
Applegate has previously talked about the support she received from her colleagues while working to finish the show. She said that she was ’’a wreck’’ every day and that most of the time she would deal with it alone in her trailer, adding that sometimes she’d have ’’a breakdown’’ on set. ’’I was like, ‘I can’t, we have to take a break, I need a half-hour,’’’ the actress admitted. Despite this, she says everyone was ’’so loving that it was okay."
We wish Christina Applegate a fast recovery and are looking forward to the award show. Fingers crossed that Applegate finally wins a much-deserved award for all the incredible work and acting talent she demonstrated in Dead to Me, especially in the final season.
