Triplet Sisters Became OBG-YN, Just Like Their Superhero Mom

In a remarkable twist of fate, Dr. Janet Gersten, an OB-GYN, not only gave birth to identical triplet daughters but witnessed them embrace the same medical path. Graduating with honors, Dr. Gersten initiated her private practice in south Miami in 1983, later founding a clinical research site.

A hero who did it all.

Dr. Janet Gersten, after completing her graduation with honors, started her private practice as one of the first female OB-GYNs in south Miami in 1983. Some years later, she founded her own private clinical research site.

Unexpectedly pregnant with triplets, Dr. Gersten gracefully navigated the challenges, culminating in a c-section at 35 weeks for a safe delivery. The three daughters—Vicky, Sarah, and Joanna—initially reacted differently to witnessing their mother in action.

A twist of fate.

The girls, Vicky, Sarah, and Joanna, were eight when they first saw their mom delivering a baby. While Sarah was in awe at how confidently her mother handled the situation, Vicky stood against the wall, and Joanna was horrified.

“Three things definitely stick out in my mind,” she recalled. “One, I did not expect the baby’s head to be so big. Two, it was the first time I ever felt like I was going to faint. And three, I definitely don’t want to be an OB-GYN.”

However, their individual interests eventually led them to complete medical residencies, uniting to join their mother’s practice in 2017.

Even though they are all OBGYNs, the Bedell sisters have their own specialty—Sarah specializes in dermatology and sexual dysfunction, Vicky in surgeries, and Joanna in miscarriage and pregnancy termination care.

It rooted in the family’s blood.

Surprisingly, the medical inclination runs deep in the family, as the triplets’ father, Dr. Robert Bedell, was also an OBGYN until his retirement and subsequent work in Palliative Care until his passing in 2013.

“His (their father) funeral was the first time we all headed back to Florida since our residency started,” Vicky said. “When this happened, we all realized just how important it is to stay together as a family,” she added.

Now, at 70 years old, Dr. Gersten expresses gratitude for the privilege of working alongside her daughters, who reciprocate the sentiment by appreciating the unique experience of being on the same professional team. “I am one of the luckiest mothers around to be able to do that,” Gersten said.

Her daughters share the same sentiment, “I love that I don’t roll my eyes when I say I have to go to work. I love that we are all on the same team and that I trust them,” Joanna added.

To Vicky, Sarah, and Joanna, their mother is a supermom. “Our mother, Dr. Janet Gersten, has been in practice for over 35 years. She’s a go-getter, role model, trailblazer, and our forever inspiration. We are eternally grateful to have her as our leader!” they shared in a sweet post for their mother.

“We definitely have some big shoes to fill when it turns out our mom is a superhero,” they captioned to end the paragraphs.

This heartwarming narrative exemplifies a family legacy in medicine, showcasing the power of individual choices, shared passions, and the joy of working together. In a similar twist of events, a family of five flew an airplane as a cabin crew, and this is their unique story.
