Sharon Stone has always remained open and transparent about her experience with breast cancer. The 65-year-old actress recently revealed that she had to get benign tumors removed from her body in 2001, something she only discovered after a mammogram. Her message for women to get screened is particularly inspiring and one that we should all spread.

During a fundraising event for the Women’s Cancer Research Fund, Sharon Stone revealed how she had to get surgery to remove tumors found in her body after a mammogram. The actress said that she “went into the hospital saying, ’If you open me up and it’s cancer, please take my breasts, because I am not a person defined by my breasts.’”

However, she eventually learned that she had been misdiagnosed, and although it wasn’t cancer, a second opinion from medical professionals revealed it was a large fibroid tumor. Sharon encouraged women to always get a second opinion when it comes to their health, stating that it could potentially save their lives.

She encouraged people to take their health more seriously.

The actress’s experience taught her an important lesson, and she has since been speaking candidly about it and encouraging people to trust their gut. “Don’t ever feel compelled not to get a mammogram, not to get a blood test, not to get surgery, because it doesn’t matter,” she said. “I’m standing here telling you I had one and a half and more tissue from my breast removed, and none of you even knew it.”

At the fundraiser, Stone praised all the women who have had or currently have breast cancer, calling them “brave.” She opened up about how many people she had lost due to the disease. “I’ve lost a lot of friends to this. I don’t want to lose anymore.” At the event, she received the Courage Award for supporting breast cancer research.

The actress continues to raise awareness.

By being honest about her experiences and using her influence to encourage people to take care of their health at all costs, Sharon Stone is using her platform for a positive reason. Her dedication to the cause is truly admirable and reminds us that there is support for whatever struggle we are enduring.
