Turns Out, Anne Hathaway Doesn’t Like Being Called Anne and She Reveals Why

Turns out, Anne Hathaway’s fans have been calling her by the wrong name this whole time. During the actress’s recent appearance on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, she revealed that she doesn’t like being called “Anne” and she even explained why.

It all started when the Oscar-winning actress visited Jimmy Fallon’s show to promote her new film Locked Down, and Fallon wondered what he should call his guest.

“I’ve heard people call you Annie, like your good friends. Do I call you Anne or Annie?” the host asked.“Call me Annie. Everybody call me Annie, please,” Hathaway insisted. Then she continued, “Can we talk about my name for a second?”

“When I was 14 years old, I did a commercial, and I had to get my SAG card and they asked me, ’Well, what do you want your name to be?’” Hathaway explained. “And I was like, ’Well, it should be my name. My name’s Anne Hathaway.’ So that seemed like the right choice, but it never occurred to me that for the rest of my life, people would call me Anne.”

Then she added, “The only person who calls me Anne is my mother and she only does it when she’s really mad at me, like really mad,” Hathaway shared. “So every time I step out in public and someone calls my name, I think they’re going to yell at me.”

The actress also confessed that it’s jarring when fans call her “Anne” when they approach her in public. “People are like, ’Anne!’ And I’m like ’What? What did I do?!’” she joked.

Annie also said that her co-stars have come up with a number of various nicknames over the years that they’ve worked together and she vastly prefers all of them to Anne.

“People are so lovely, they don’t want to be presumptuous and so I think they come up with workarounds on set because the truth is nobody’s comfortable with calling me Anne ever. It doesn’t fit. I’m an Annie. People call me H, people call me Hath, so feel free, call me anything but Anne.”
