“You Don’t Know Me,” Priyanka Chopra Reveals Her Surrogacy Was a “Necessary Step”

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas faced unwarranted backlash when they shared the news of their daughter’s, Malti Marie, birth through surrogacy in 2022. Chopra later disclosed her medical necessity for surrogacy, confronting those who criticized and judged her.

Despite facing numerous challenges, they stayed together.

The romantic tale of Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas is undeniably heartwarming. Their story began when Jonas mustered the courage to text the model in 2016. He expressed the idea of meeting in the message, stating, “Several friends have told me that we should meet. What do you think about that?” Surprisingly, this simple message sparked a connection, and they continued to communicate for a solid 6 months.

Despite the considerable age gap (Chopra, 41, and Jonas, 31), geographical separation, demanding careers, and the rich tapestry of their diverse cultural backgrounds, none of these challenges could drive a wedge between their love and commitment. Addressing their age gap, Priyanka said in an interview, “I wanted stability, and I didn’t give Nick enough credit until I went out with him on our first date. We spent the whole evening together, and I realized my husband is just like an old soul. He’s stability in human form.”

After being in a relationship for several years, the couple decided to get married.

In 2018, they tied the knot, and in January 2022, Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas celebrated the arrival of their first child, Malti, born via a surrogate. The initial 100 days of Malti’s life were spent in the neonatal intensive care unit, but by May, she could join her loving parents at home. “I don’t even know how I’ll ever discipline her because I just don’t have it in me,” Priyanka reflected.

After their surrogate daughter’s revelation, many people criticized Priyanka.

When facing comments regarding her choice of surrogacy to become a mother, Priyanka Chopra revealed that it was a medically necessary decision. In an interview, she candidly explained that she had encountered medical challenges and expressed her gratitude for being in a position to choose this path. “Our surrogate was so generous, kind, lovely, and funny, and she took care of this precious gift for us for 6 months,” she added.

She also confronted the criticism she encountered for opting for surrogacy. “You don’t know me,” Chopra said, “You don’t know what I’ve been through. And just because I don’t want to make my medical history or my daughter’s public doesn’t give you the right to make up whatever the reasons were.”

She became a protective mother.

Chopra emphasized how she’s grown resilient to criticism directed at herself over the years. “But it’s so painful when they talk about my daughter. I’m like, ‘Keep her out of it.’ I know what it felt like to hold her little hands when they were trying to find her veins. So no, she’s not going to be gossip.” She explained that her protectiveness isn’t just about safeguarding her own life but equally about preserving her daughter’s peace and privacy.

She opened up about her daughter’s health.

Malti arrived prematurely, three months earlier than her expected due date. She entered this world so tiny that Priyanka Chopra, present during her birth, described her as smaller than her hand. The fragile newborn needed to be transported regularly to the neonatal intensive care unit in California, where she stayed for approximately three months. During this challenging time, Chopra admitted that she was uncertain whether her daughter would overcome these early struggles or not.

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas aren’t the sole celebrities who have chosen surrogacy to expand their families. Some of the most well-known figures in the entertainment world who have also pursued this path include Nicole Kidman, Sarah Jessica Parker, Lucy Liu, and many more.
