So when you’re driving, you get a green light everywhere — except for Japan — the traffic light is actually blue there. The problem is purely linguistic: old Japanese had the same word “ao” for blue and green. Even though modern Japanese has a separate word for “green,” the linguists objected, and the government left the “ao” color for the traffic light. It’s technically green, but it’s the bluest shade possible, so we perceive it as blue.

If You Do That in a Hotel, You’ll Shock the Staff

If You Do That in a Hotel, You’ll Shock the Staff

Carefully arranging your used towels isn’t the best thing to do in a hotel. You’re just not helping. The general rule is: dump them somewhere like the bathroom floor or in the bathtub. Then the staff can see that they need to change the towels. If you keep them all nice and folded, the staff may just get it wrong and leave them as they are, thinking that they’re still fresh.

Did you ever notice that the toilet paper color is usually white? But this color wasn’t always a favorite. In fact, colored toilet paper popped out on the shelves in the 1950s. Homeowners purchased pink, blue, yellow, green, and even black paper because these colors matched the interior. But eventually, many doctors began to associate the dye in colored toilet papers with increased health risks. Also, the dye didn’t allow the colored paper to decompose as quickly when it was flushed down, which increased the risk of clogging septic tanks. This made manufacturing and retail prices too high compared to the basic white paper. And eventually, the demand began to fall.

Poor Pete. Pete is so scared of bugs all he wants is to find a place on Earth where he can be safe from them. After years of research and traveling, he eventually finds the place to go: Antarctica! Pete makes it there, confident that bugs wouldn’t survive in the cold. Ahhhhhhh! Little did he know that insects are on every continent of this planet. Well, not really. He was kind of right about Antarctica: it isn’t home to a lot of bugs. In fact, there is only one true species of insect that calls this place home: it’s a wingless midge called Belgica antarctica. This fly is tiny [0.08 to 0.23 inches long], but it’s still Antarctica’s largest terrestrial bug.

Why Airplanes Don’t Have Keys

Why Airplanes Don’t Have Keys
Curiosities

It seems strange that a commercial jet doesn’t have keys to turn it on! But it’s a bit more complicated than just turning a key. Instead, there’s a series of buttons and dials on the control board that starts the complicated process. A battery provides the power to the aircraft that is charged through a small electric generator within the jet’s tail. Airflow gets in and moves into the jet’s engines to keep them cool. A reserve power then warms the turbines by turning them slowly until they start spinning at the right rate. Then, the engines can be turned on, one at a time. With up to 4 engines on a commercial jet, this entire process can take up to 90 minutes!

On average, Earth’s waters rise by 14 hundredths of an inch each year, and sometimes I feel like, you know, getting some floaties. So we can’t help but wonder what if we end up living underwater? We now have evidence that humans could adapt to that. The Bajau — a group of people living in South-East Asia — have evolved to have enlarged spleens. The spleen is the organ that stores oxygen-rich red blood cells. When these cells are released into the bloodstream, they enable divers to hold their breath underwater for longer periods of time. This allows the Bajau people to free dive to depths of up to 230 feet!

With technology moving forward, there’s a new advanced system that takes driver’s license photos. And it’s not just a regular 2D photo of you. The system analyzes different areas of your face and encrypts the data. To make it easier for facial recognition software to scan your face, you need to have a neutral expression. We love movies because they offer us a getaway from the problems that we have to deal with in our daily lives. For example, movie characters always speak and write correctly, and when they get letters, they are opened incredibly quickly, as if nobody even sealed them.
