12 Celebrities Who Used Surrogacy to Become Parents
Whether it is due to fertility problems or other issues, many couples decide to start a family through surrogacy. While some people might find that uncommon, there are actually many couples out there doing it, including several celebrities, who, for different reasons, opted for this method to have their children.
Bright Side is telling you which celebrities fulfilled their desire to become parents thanks to a surrogate. Their stories show us that love for children is very strong, regardless of the way they come into the world.
1. Ricky Martin
In 2008, the singer and his partner became parents for the first time thanks to surrogacy. The twins that were born back then, Matteo and Valentino, are now 13 years old. But it didn’t stop there, as both Ricky Martin and his husband, Jwan Yosef, wished to have a large family. So in 2018 that wish came true with the birth of a third baby, Lucia, and a year later, they were blessed with a fourth child, named Renn, both gestated with the same method.
2. Nicole Kidman
The award-winning actress and her husband, Keith Urban, welcomed their youngest daughter, Faith, born in 2011, through a surrogate mother. 3 years earlier, Nicole gave birth to Sunday Rose. She is also the mother of a boy and a girl that she adopted with her former partner, Tom Cruise.
3. Jimmy Fallon
The actor, comedian, and television host, Jimmy Fallon, is a father to 2 girls, both of them born through surrogacy. He and his wife had to go through a rather difficult road to parenthood. During an interview conducted by Today magazine, Fallon admitted that the couple “tried a bunch of things.” Then, when none of these worked, they finally opted to look for a surrogate to start their long-awaited family.
4. Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian gave birth naturally to her 2 older children. However, due to health problems that put possible future pregnancies at risk, she and her ex-partner, Kanye West, decided to look for surrogate mothers that could help them achieve their goal of having a large family. That’s how their 2 youngest children were born. Today, the reality TV star can say that her family is complete.
5. Elton John
At the age of 64, the singer fulfilled his dream of becoming a father with the arrival of his first child, Zachary. 2 years later, he welcomed Elijah. Elton and his husband were able to start their beautiful family thanks to a surrogate mother as well.
6. Neil Patrick Harris
Neil Patrick Harris, most well-known for the amazing performance he delivered on How I Met Your Mother as Barney, and actor David Burtka are parents to twins Harper Grace and Gideon Scott. The children, now both 10 years old, were conceived with the help of 2 women: an egg donor and the surrogate mother who carried them in her womb.
7. Cristiano Ronaldo
One of the most famous soccer players in the history of sports is also a father to 4 children, 3 of which were born through a surrogacy pregnancy process. Ronaldo decided to approach fatherhood this way, both with his eldest son, Cristiano, and with the twins, Mateo and Eva. However, that was with his previous partner. Today, with his current partner, he welcomed little Alana Martina, who was conceived naturally, into the family.
8. Sarah Jessica Parker
The actress became a mother for the first time at the age of 37 when she gave birth to her son, James. Later, when she wanted to conceive again, she was unable to do so, so she and her husband, Matthew Broderick, opted for a surrogate. “Meeting your children rather than giving birth to them, it’s as if, um, it’s—suspended animation. <...> It’s so different, and equally extraordinary. I am very poor at describing it. But it’s amazing.” This is how her twins, Tabitha and Marion, were born.
9. Elizabeth Banks
Due to fertility problems, the actress, director, and producer was unable to conceive her children naturally. Therefore, she had her 2 children, who are ages 10 and 9, through surrogacy. In an interview, she mentioned, “I definitely think I’m still judged for what I’ve done and that people don’t understand my choices, but I don’t feel I owe anybody any explanation.” Despite that, she is grateful that her story helps others in the same situation.
10. Robert De Niro
Here’s something you probably didn’t know about one of the most famous actors in Hollywood. At 68 years of age, De Niro became a father for the sixth time when he and his partner welcomed a baby girl named Helen Grace into the world, who was gestated in a surrogate womb. De Niro actually has another child with his current partner and 4 others with his former wife, one of which was adopted.
11. Dennis Quaid
In 2007, the actor and his wife welcomed their children, Zoe and Thomas, who were born to a surrogate mother. Quaid, who was 53 years old at the time, was already the father of a child from his previous marriage to actress Meg Ryan.
12. Lucy Liu
The actress from Elementary wanted to be a mother no matter what, and she finally managed to do it at the age of 46 through gestational surrogacy. This is how she welcomed her son, Rockwell, who is now almost 6 years old.
