Meet Harnaam Kaur, a Bearded Lady, Who Turned Her Condition Into Her Beauty Strength and Won Our Hearts
Some women may have a condition called hirsutism. It’s the excessive growth of coarse, dark hair that appears on the face, chest, abdomen, and other body parts. Hirsutism is a symptom of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and it may affect up to 10% of women. Today’s featured heroine, Harnaam Kaur, knows all the struggles related to this condition, but she turned her excessive facial hair into a beauty accessory, and we’d love for you to dive into her meaningful story.
Harnaam Kaur’s struggle started at an early age.
Harnaam Kaur is a 31-year-old woman who lives in England. She leads a normal life, just like everyone else, but she has a beard. Her beard is not artificial and it was given to her by nature.
Kaur is absolutely feminine but due to polycystic ovary syndrome, she has a special condition called hirsutism. The woman used to remove her facial hair, but one day, she just stopped trying to get rid of it.
She grew up learning to accept and flaunt her beard, but the task wasn’t easy at all. She admits that she was criticised for her facial hair. But now she’s a recognized influencer who’s perfectly pairing her beard with beautiful dresses and gorgeous makeup to prove beauty never depends on the absence of body hair.
She’s a proud holder of a Guinness World Record
On International Women’s Day, Guinness World Records featured 5 inspiring female record holders so that women all over the world could find inspiration. One of these women was Harnaam Kaur.
She’s become one of Guinness’ most inspirational female record holders. Kaur became the world’s youngest female with a full beard at 24 years and 282 days old.
Kaur believes that beauty stereotypes play a huge role in how women with facial hair are treated. In her interview, she said, “It’s so funny that it’s okay when it’s on a guy, but when it’s on women it’s mocked. Why do I need to keep explaining my body? Women’s bodies are so policed.”
Since then, Kaur has achieved a lot and delivered her message to many.
Kaur’s message is all about self-love and doesn’t just apply to women with facial hair. She wants to let people know that whatever they are going through, they are not alone. In her interview, she declared, “You’re not alone. You’re struggling with self-esteem, lack of confidence whatever it is.” The woman now devotes her life to inspiring people for seeking beauty in themselves, whatever shape, size, and form it may come in.
A lot has changed in Kaur’s life since she was awarded her record title. She is a well-known motivational speaker and has appeared on the cover of magazines, such as Cosmopolitan and Glamour.
Kaur says that she has named her beard Sundri, which means beauty or beautiful, and the woman refers to her beard as a “she,” and it helps her to promote self-love and acceptance.
Kaur has become a huge inspiration for many people.
Kaur made her catwalk debut by opening the Marianna Harutunian Royal Fashion Day show. She was wearing her traditional Sikh turban, a navy dress, and black heels. After the debut, she made a heartfelt Instagram post where she wrote, “I always wanted to be like the pretty models, so I remember copying the way they posed and walked. I grew up being told I was too fat, ugly, and disgusting to ever model. I was told I’d never walk the runway.”
And then she made a statement for all naysayers, saying, “I was lucky enough to walk for the show as the first bearded lady to walk for a celebrity jewelry designer. I was humbled to be the first model to walk and open the show for Royal Fashion Day with the portrait of the legendary David Bowie looking down on me!”
