“We Just Enjoy Each Other’s Company.” The 3-Decade-Long Love Story of Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick

Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary in 2018 by singing “To Love Somebody,” by the Bee Gees, together and their sweet duet won the hearts of thousands. They’ve spent a whole lifetime together, and it’s not surprising that people want to know their secret to a happy and strong marriage. In one of his interviews, Kevin Bacon said: “I’d love to tell you that I have a secret for that, but I think that we just really enjoy each other’s company. I think that we are kind of meant to be together.”

The touching story of how Kevin first asked Kyra out

Kyra told this story in one of her interviews. Kevin and Kyra first met on the set of the movie Lemon Sky. Every night after their shoot Kevin would ask the team, “Who would like to go out for dinner?” The whole cast would say, “Yes,” except for Kyra, but it was her that Kevin actually wanted to go out with.

A couple of weeks passed and, in one of the movie scenes, Kevin was massaging oil onto Kyra’s back. He noted that her muscles were tight and suggested that Kyra should meet the massage therapist who was working in the hotel that Kevin was living in during the shooting. The massage room was located in the hotel gym, and when Kyra was done with her massage and left the room, she saw Kevin, who had just finished his workout (this was no coincidence, of course!). That’s how the 2 of them finally had their dinner together.

They got married in 1988 and had 2 children soon afterward.

Bacon and Sedgwick celebrated their wedding on September 4, 1988 and welcomed their first child, son Travis Sedgwick Bacon in 1989, and daughter Sosie Ruth Bacon in 1992. In her interview, Kyra confessed that welcoming her first baby was a very exciting moment, and frightful in its own way.

“The minute I had a child I was like, God, I want to make sure there’s a good place here for him,” said the actress. “[Kevin and I] are both people who are spurred into action, and we like to be part of giving back. It’s our responsibility.”

Being responsible parents, they wanted to make this world a better place for their kids. Kevin and Kyra minimized their use of plastic and became advocates for conservation, saving the ocean and spreading climate change awareness. As the years went by, activism took up an even larger part of their lives, both separately and as a couple.

They’ve been married for more than 30 years now, and here’s how Kyra and Kevin are making it happen.

Even though Kyra and Kevin both say they have no secrets for a happy marriage, there are things they do to keep their relationship strong day by day, and they shared some of those things in their big interview for Glamour.

They believe in each other. For many years Kevin encouraged Kyra to become a director. “I just kept saying to her, ’I know you can do this.’ I knew she could do it because when she would visit my sets, she’d always be so close to blurting out some kind of direction or suggestion,” Kevin recollects. Eventually, Kevin managed to persuade Kyra, and she directed Story of a Girl in 2017. “It really wouldn’t have happened unless he kept pounding the table,” says Kyra.

They are ready to sacrifice so much for each other and their family. As Kevin recollects, Kyra made a lot of sacrifices when she refused to participate in many projects and stayed home to raise their kids instead. He has always appreciated that, and once, when Kyra was offered a leading role in a TV show and she wanted to turn down that offer, he said: “Listen, I’ll stay with the kids.” Still, Kevin believes that it was Kyra who did the most sacrificing for their family, and made the decisions that were probably not the best for her career.

They are each other’s support system. Whatever projects they’re up to, no matter how crazy or hard those projects can be, Kevin and Kyra always support each other and try to find the best way to make things work. “We don’t start with ‘No.’ ‘No, you can’t do that.’ ‘You can’t go away.’ ‘You can’t do that job.’ It’s kind of the opposite. [...] If something comes up, we talk about it, but not from the ‘Oh, you can’t go away.’ That’s not the place we start,” explains Kevin.

They know how to keep their relationship fresh. Kevin and Kyra know how to surprise each other and how to express their feelings. They love singing together and playing their guitar and ukulele, and they often share their sweet duets with their fans on their Instagram accounts. By the way, Kyra, Kevin, and their children all have matching family tattoos — it’s a symbol that combines all of their initials.
