13 Mandela Effect Examples That Will Make You Question Your Memory
The Mandela effect is a phenomenon that makes us question the most mundane aspects of our day-to-day life. Some people might blame it on alternate realities or parallel universes, but the most rational explanation is that, sometimes, the mind just plays tricks on us.
Bright Side found 13 Mandela effect examples that will help you make sense of this fascinating phenomenon.
1. “Life is like a box of chocolates.”
Most of us watched and loved the award-winning movie, Forrest Gump, but we’ve been experiencing the Mandela effect because, all this time, we’ve been quoting it wrong. In the movie, Forrest’s mother states her life philosophy, “Life is like a box of chocolates” years before he narrates the story. Since Forrest is referring to a past event, he says his mother always said: “Life was like a box of chocolates,” changing the present tense to past tense.
2. There’s no hyphen in Kit Kat.
Many people seem to remember Kit Kat having a hyphen, making it “Kit-Kat,” but there has never been one. Consumers from around the world insist that they have, in fact, seen it, making them experience the phenomenon.
3. Cheez-It, not Cheez-Itz
When looking at the popular cracker brand, people have started feeling like something was missing from the name. But that is only because there are people who believe that it was actually named “Cheez-Itz.” In fact, the crackers have always been called “Cheez-It,” making all of us experience the Mandela effect.
4. Double “Stuf” Oreos
Another Mandela effect that has surprised each and every one of us is the Double Stuf Oreo. Maybe we were just busy dunking our favorite cookie into a glass of milk to notice that there isn’t actually a second ‘f’ on the packaging.
5. There’s no “T” in Skechers.
The famous footwear brand may have been the latest trend in the early 1990s, but a lot of people do not know how to properly spell the company’s name. Some believe it is Sketchers, but the truth is that the name does not have a “t.” It is simply — Skechers.
6. “You’re so 2008.”
While some swear the Black Eyed Peas released their hit single “Boom Boom Pow” in 2008, it really came out in 2009. And Fergie doesn’t sing, “I’m so 2008/You’re so 2000 and late,” she says, “I’m so 3008/You’re so 2000 and late.” No wonder there’s some confusion around this one.
7. “Run, you fools!”
In The Fellowship of the Ring, Gandalf fights off the magical demon, only to fall to his death from a stone bridge. Remember when he tells Frodo and the rest of the crew “Run, you fools!” before his dramatic fall? Truth is, the wise wizard actually said, “Fly, you fools!”
8. “Luke, I am your father.”
“Luke, I am your father” is probably one of the greatest misremembered phrases of all time. Instead, Darth Vader told his son, “No, I am your father.” If that doesn’t make you want to re-watch this classic film to make sure, nothing will.
9. Monopoly Man never had a monocle.
It’s possible that people are confusing Rich Uncle Pennybags with Mr. Peanut, the Planter peanut’s mascot (who also wears a top hat and carries around a cane). But there are a number of concerned citizens who can’t seem to grasp how the Monopoly man is monocle-less when they distinctly remembered him wearing one.
10. C-3PO’s silver leg
Another “Star Wars” Mandela Effect that has even tricked some of the most diehard fans. The lovable robot sidekick, C-3PO, is depicted to some as being all gold from head to toe. But if you take a closer look, the droid’s right leg is silver below the knee
11. E.T. Mandela effect
Although it can be a bit confusing, E.T. never said, “E.T. phone home.” Turns out, the little alien always said “E.T. home phone.” It was actually Gertie saying “phone home” when trying to correct E.T.’s grammar.
12. Leonardo’s first Oscar
Some fans insisted that Leonardo DiCaprio’s first win was for Titanic and they remember that many talk shows displayed clips of his speech. In reality, the award actually went to Jack Nicholson for his performance in As Good as It Gets. Titanic won a record number of Oscars during the ceremony, so maybe people assumed DiCaprio won one of the awards, therefore fabricating his win. His actual win was in 2016 for The Revenant.
13. “What if I told you...”
We all remember the scene where Neo sits down with Morpheus, just before he decides which pill to take and the cool moment where Morpheus starts his talk by saying “What if I told you.....”. But Morpheus never says those exact words, yet there are millions of fans out there who would argue that he does.
