SUGAR in and of itself, DOES NOT CAUSE DIABETES. Carbohydrates DO. Starches in pasta, potatoes, rice, bread, and even some vegetables turn to sugar. Especially if you are not vary active, to burn them off. I know this because that happened in my family, on BOTH SIDES. Too much of anything isn't good for you, but being able to "cook" has very little to do with it. I am glad that you are finding ways to keep yourself happy and NOT hungry, without needing to impress your MIL. It IS nice that she was cool about it, too
