A rugbyman, was just about to finish the race when he stopped in order to carry his former teammate to cross the finish line with him. The two men played in the same team, until Rob was diagnosed with a degenerative condition in 2019. And their story proves that real friendship will help us through the worst struggles of life.
The 42-year-old iconic figure in the sport of rugby league, Kevin Sinfield, was participating in the inaugural Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon which was held in support of two MND charities. Rob Burrow himself is a 40-year-old former professional rugby league player who previously played in the same team as Sinfield.
4 years ago, Burrow who is also a legend in the sport, was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) which is a degenerative condition that affects how nerves in the brain and spinal cord function.
Rob, who was 37 at the time of the diagnosis, had noted, ’’It was a bit of a shock. I’d not had any sort of prep for being told that you have something where there’s no cure.’’ That said, the former athlete had reassured that he refused ’’to lie down and just take it’’, and instead he was going to choose to stay strong and positive.
Rob’s determination and positivity were clear as he participated in the marathon. And thanks to his good friend Kevin, he was able to finish the race as fans were cheering for the duo.
In fact, Kevin paused a few steps away from the finish line in order to carry his former teammate out of his wheelchair, holding him tightly into his arms. And spectators erupted in cheers, acknowledging the heartfelt moment shared by friends.
