Meghan is a great gal!
Why Meghan Markle Is a True Role Model
Meghan has caused a lot of commotion since she started dating and then married Prince Harry. Some criticize her choices in life or fashion, but others have taken the time to get to know her better: who she is, what she believes in, and how she’s a new role model for women nowadays. It’s fascinating how she broke down barriers that we didn’t even know existed until now, changing the world in the process.
1. She stands up for herself.
Meghan feels frustrated if she can’t speak up about things. She’s always been very independent and has used her voice to stand up for herself and others. Besides, she used to be very active on social media and her blog, where she talked about women’s rights.
When she was asked to comment on her court fight over her dad’s letter, she said, “At a certain point, no matter how difficult it is, you know the difference between right and wrong. You must stand up for what’s right.”
2. She wants to make a difference.
Once, Meghan cold-called statesmen on their private phones and used her royal title to lobby for paid paternity leave. They were shocked that she called out of the blue.
Meghan and Gloria Steinem also called potential voters, asking them to participate in elections. Gloria said, “Meghan is such an inspiration to me because she has a kind of ’princess’ stereotype hanging over her head. The whole idea of ’princess’ is a problem. Meg is herself, smart, authentic, and funny.”
3. She handles criticism and doesn’t complain.
George Clooney even says that the media treats the duchess unfairly, noting, “It’s unfair at times when the press can turn on you for sort of ridiculous reasons and for almost nothing, and it seemed to me to be a little unjust since she hadn’t done anything except just happen to live her life. She’s a really kind and smart and intelligent young woman.”
Oprah Winfrey also supports Meghan, “I think she’s being portrayed unfairly. I feel that if people really knew her, they’d know that she has a wonderful warm, giving, funny heart. I see all the crazy press around her, and I think it’s really unfair.” She also confirmed that the duchess avoids the negative press about her.
4. She’s actively engaged in humanitarian work.
A charity campaigner who worked in India with Prince Harry and Meghan says she’s a “true humanitarian and exceedingly genuine.” It’s not the only humanitarian work she’s done. She’s also a United Nations ambassador. She went to Rwanda with World Vision Canada and India to support women and girls living in slums. Moreover, she also wrote a really powerful essay for TIME about fighting the shame and discrimination surrounding menstruation.
5. She supports women and gender equality.
Believe it or not, she first spoke up against sexism when she was only 11! Meghan also thinks it’s important to listen to what women have to say.
“I hear a lot of people speaking about girls’ empowerment and women’s empowerment — you will hear people saying they are helping women find their voices. I fundamentally disagree with that because women don’t need to find their voices, they need to be empowered to use them and people need to be urged to listen.”
