Meryl Streep, the renowned actress we all admire, had moments of self-doubt when she was younger. At a recent event, she joined Stephen Colbert to chat about various topics, including her early days in acting.

During their conversation, the Oscar-winning star shared that she’s not fond of watching her earlier movies because they bring back memories of her feeling down back then. “I’ll come upon a movie I’m in, and I’m very young and very beautiful. But I was so unhappy,” she said.

Apparently people gave her a hard time when she was young.

She went on explaining, “I thought my nose was too big, I thought I was fat. Because these are things that people tell you.” Streep also shared how she’s explored different aspects of her image during her career.

At times, she deliberately took on roles that didn’t emphasize her beauty but instead highlighted her incredible talent and versatility. “I could play older when I was young. I could play a man in Angels in America. I could screw around with how I looked,” she said. “Which to me is an act: to say ‘it’s not always going to attract your lust or your interest, or anything to do with ingratiation.’”

Discussing the significance of empathy, Streep stressed that it is a powerful force for positive change. She shared her thoughts on leaders and individuals who may not prioritize empathy in their actions, highlighting the importance of this quality in fostering understanding and compassion in our society.

“We all stop imagining, so quickly in life, what it’s like to be other people,” she continued. “But empathy is the thing that will save us, if we will be saved.”

Her past insecurities have contributed to the strong woman we know today.

Her previous doubts regarding her weight and appearance significantly contributed to shaping the resilient individual she has become today. Back then, she used to feel uncertain and not very confident about herself, just like many of us do sometimes. However, those tough times helped her become resilient and tough.

She learned to accept herself for who she is, flaws and all. This made her determined to become the strong woman she is now. Her story shows us that even when we have doubts and worries, we can use them to become even stronger and more confident in the end.
