“I’m Proud to Be Your Mother” — Jamie Lee Curtis Shares Her Daughter’s Journey Coming Out as Trans
Actress Jamie Lee Curtis and her husband Christopher Guest are proud parents to daughters Annie and Ruby, the latter of which came out as trans last year. In a recent interview, Ruby and her mother shared their story for the first time. The legendary actress admits that she and her husband watched in ’’wonder and pride’’ as their child transitioned.
We at Bright Side applaud the legendary actress for showing her unconditional love for her daughter, and today we bring you the details of Ruby’s journey.
Ruby was born as Thomas.
The 63-year-old Hollywood star and her husband adopted their eldest child, Annie in 1986, and 2 years later, Ruby came along. She was born as Thomas in 1996, and like her older sister, Ruby was adopted when she was a baby. Curtis has been a devoted mother ever since, even if this meant not accepting movie roles.
“My life is so filled, so if I accept acting work now, it means I have to let somebody else do the job I want to do, which is to raise my children,” she once confessed. But even the most involved parents sometimes need a little help noticing that important changes are happening in their child’s life.
Ruby’s journey started when she was about 16 years old, when one of her trans friends asked her about her gender. At that time, she was convinced that she was male. But a short time after that, Ruby started dwelling on the question and concluded that she didn’t feel entirely like a boy.
’’I was, maybe not Ruby per se, but I knew I was different,’’ she explained in the interview. Ruby admitted that due to a negative experience she had while in therapy, she hesitated to come out as trans for a while.
She was initially hesitant to come out.
A couple of years later, while still being Thomas, Ruby opened up to the person who is now her fiancé that she was probably trans. Her partner didn’t hesitate to support her from the beginning: “I love you for who you are,” her fiancé said. But it was not until 2020 when Ruby decided it was time to talk to her parents: “It was intimidating, but I wasn’t worried,” she explained. But no matter how much she wanted to share how she was feeling, Ruby was unable to vocalize it.
She hesitated to open up to her parents.
She ended up sending a message to her mom, and Jamie called her straight away to let her know she was there for her. The actress admits there were also “some tears involved” during their first conversation. When asked if she had a feeling that Ruby was trans, Jamie Lee said that she knew Ruby had had a boyfriend and that she sometimes used the word ’’bi’’: “But gender identity and sexual orientation are 2 separate things,” the actress explained.
’’It didn’t cross my mind at that time that she was trans.’’
Jamie also said she knew that Ruby played female characters in video games, but she didn’t think her daughter was trans back then: “But when I replayed Ruby’s life, I went, ’Hmm, that, that, those, hmm,’” Jamie Lee recalls. Despite being involved in and supporting the LGBTQ+ community for years, Jamie Lee confessed that there were a lot of new things to learn and get used to after Ruby came out.
Learning new terminology was “evolutionary.”
She said the hardest part was hearing her daughter’s ’’dead name’’: ’’It doesn’t fit anymore. Just the regularity of the word. The name that you’d given a child. That you’ve been saying their whole life. And so, of course, at first that was the challenge.’’
For Jamie and her family, learning new terminology was ’’evolutionary’’: ’’We have tried to maintain it in a big way. I’m learning a lot from Ruby,’’ Curtis said. But she admits that she and her husband still have ’’occasional slips’’ with the use of the right pronoun for their daughter, but Ruby says she doesn’t mind it that much: ’’I don’t get mad at them for that.’’
Ruby is hoping that her story will help others.
Despite having famous parents, Jamie’s kids are quite private. Ruby explains that her coming out had nothing to do with her mom being a famous actress: ’’I’ve tried to stay out of the spotlight for many years, or at least done my best to. I’m happy to be more visible if it helps others.’’
’’I am proud to be your mother. Today more than ever.’’
Ruby hopes that people will still remember her for who she is as a person: ’’But they will finally get to see who I’ve always been, you know, inside. Now I finally get to show it on the outside.’’ After giving their first interview together as mother and daughter, Jamie Lee posted their story, saying ’’Ruby, I am proud to be your mother. Today more than ever.’’
In May this year, Jamie announced that Ruby is getting married.
Curtis didn’t hide her excitement about the news and kept spreading joy as she posted a series of wedding photos on her Instagram. Ruby and her long-time partner Kynthia tied the knot on May 29 this year. The happy couple enjoyed an intimate, World of Warcraft-themed wedding in the Curtis family backyard. To make things even more special, Jamie Lee also wore a video game-inspired costume and even officiated the wedding.
Jamie and the rest of the family continue to lovingly support Ruby and her partner.
Jamie Lee, who has been very supportive of her daughter throughout her transition, also emphasizes that she is not trying to ’’force-feed’’ their experience to people: ’’I’m simply saying, ’This is our family’s experience.’ I am here to support Ruby. That is my job. Just as it is to care and love and support her older sister Annie in her journeys,’’ she added.
Ruby’s journey is a clear example of how unconditional love and support can make anything possible. What is the most heartwarming transition story you have ever heard?
