There are many beauty tips on the Internet, but sometimes they can do more harm than good, especially if you have sensitive skin. And applying a turmeric mask to your face can become a nightmare. That’s because your skin doesn’t like experiments and needs proper care.

We at Bright Side try to avoid any harm that can be done by undergoing certain beauty procedures and would like to share what may damage your skin.

1. Using DIY masks that can dye your skin

Natural masks can be helpful for our skin, but be careful with the ingredients that you use. Some of them can simply dye your skin, like carrots or turmeric. This situation happened to a blogger whose skin became yellow after such an experiment.

2. Using coconut oil on your face

Coconut oil is highly comedogenic, experts say. As a result, it clogs pores so there is a high chance of breakouts and blackheads. The same applies to the skin on your body. If you want to take care of your skin, it’s better to use creams that are made specifically for it.

3. Using lemon to brighten your skin

Lemons have a pH of 2-3 and can damage the protective barrier of the skin. For comparison, the pH of our skin is between 4-5. Although using lemon can lighten your face a bit, after exposing it to some sunlight, the skin can develop blisters and irritation.

4. Using apple cider vinegar to mask body odor

You can find some tips on how to use apple cider vinegar to hide body odor online, but it’s not recommended since it causes burns due to its strong acids. After applying it, you can get irritated skin, especially if the vinegar is undiluted.

5. Exfoliating with baking soda and coffee

Baking soda can work as a skin exfoliant and remove dead skin cells and bacteria. But on the other side, your skin can become susceptible to moisture loss and get dry. The loss of the moisture barrier also leads to the growth of foreign bacteria.

6. Applying toothpaste to shrink pimples

It’s better to avoid applying toothpaste to your pimples to make them dry out. Instead, it will likely burn and irritate your skin, especially your face. Besides, it may lead to a rash known as contact dermatitis.

7. Using steam to soothe skin

Over-steaming can leave your skin irritated and dry. Make sure you don’t do this procedure often and regulate the temperature of the steam. Heat can break collagen, causing wrinkles to appear faster.

8. Using body lotion for your face

Lotions are made for your body only. They can dry out and/or irritate the sensitive skin on your face. The skin on the body is thicker and can handle strong fragrances and cheaper ingredients.

What is your favorite beauty procedure or product? Do you practice DIY procedures? What exactly?
