The Unusual Love Story of Will Smith and Jada Who Celebrate 25 Years Together

The union of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith is one of the longest in Hollywood. The couple has been married for 25 years already. But their relationship is far from being ordinary. After more than two decades together, the Smiths revealed that their marriage is open, which means that they can date different people but remain in their partnership. However, despite this, they’re still in love with each other.

We at Bright Side have decided to make a timeline of the romantic relationship between Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith.

Will and Jada first met in 1990.

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett met in 1990 when he was 22, and she was 19. Will was given a lead role in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air sitcom, and the young actress auditioned for the role of his girlfriend. Unfortunately, Jada didn’t get the part because of her height, as Will is much higher than her.

As Will later said, it was love at first sight. But at that time, they were only friends.

5 years later, they started dating.

5 years after their first meeting, Will and Jada started dating. At this time, the actor had divorced his first wife, Sheree Zampino, who in 1992 gave birth to a son, Trey (in the left photo). Although Will didn’t believe in divorce, after meeting Jada, he realized that his wife wasn’t the person he was supposed to be with.

The couple got married in 1997.

A year after dating, Will and Jada got engaged, but no details were reported. The marriage became official in 1997, but it didn’t go well for Jada. Being 3 months pregnant, the wedding went horribly, as Jada felt very sick. Believe it or not, Jada didn’t even want to get married because didn’t see the point in it, but her mom insisted, as she wanted to attend her daughter’s wedding.

Will and Jada welcomed 2 children together.

In 1998, the couple welcomed their first son, Jaden, and in 2000, their daughter Willow was born. Both kids later appeared in movies alongside their father. Jaden followed in his parents’ superstar footsteps in acting and singing, and Willow is more into modeling and hosting.

The couple announced that they were in an open marriage.

Will said that his relationship with his wife began as traditional and monogamous, but at some point, the couple “felt miserable at the same time” and decided to change the format of communication. They started being seen out in public with other partners, but it didn’t mean they were divorced — it was just a new format of their relationship, as unconventional as it seemed. It was a mutual decision since both parties decided, after spending many years together, that “marriage can’t be a prison.”

For some time, Jada was dating another man.

In 2020, Jada confirmed the rumors that she was in a relationship with American musician August Alsina. Jada said that she had an affair with the musician about 4.5 years ago. This affair took place during the time when she and Smith broke up.

“I just wanted to feel good, it had been so long since I felt good,” she revealed about her relationship with August. But their romance was temporary and soon after, Jada realized, “You can’t find happiness outside yourself.”

Despite their open marriage, they are still in love with each other.

Despite their open relationship, they still are the main people in each other’s lives. The couple doesn’t call their relationship a marriage, but rather, a life partnership. “There’s nothing that could happen that we won’t be together and love each other,” Will once said. As they both claim, “We ride together, we die together,” and we hope that this bond will never break!

What do you think about the open marriage Will and Jada have? Would you ever try this type of relationship in your life?

I think you missed the part where they've been unhappy for years and are currently going through therapy to try to fix their broken relationship.
