6 Tips to Survive Critical Situations When You’re Alone
Crowd panic is something that can distract you during certain critical situations, but you can get frightened when you’re alone as well. With that being said, there are some things you can do to help yourself and prevent the situation from getting worse.
We at Bright Side checked out some practical tips that can save your life in case of an emergency when you’re alone, and we want to share them with you.
1. How to help yourself if you begin choking

Choking cuts off oxygen to the brain so it’s crucial to give first aid as quickly as possible. If you’re alone, use this method.
- Make a firm fist and place it slightly above your navel.
- Wrap your fist with the other hand and bend over a countertop or chair.
- Shove your fist inward and upward to make the object move up.

Also, you can try to perform the Heimlich maneuver.
- Make a firm fist with any hand that’s convenient for you.
- Now press your fist against your abdomen below the ribcage but above the navel. Cover your other hand around your fist.
- Start pressing against your abdomen until the piece of food is dislodged. Make sharp and quick upward thrusts to dislodge the stuck object.

The head-down position is another way to help yourself. It’s typically recommended during choking in children below one year. If the Heimlich maneuver doesn’t help, try this:
- Bend at the lower back so that the body is perpendicular to the floor. Lean on your hands.
- You can also use a chair to rest your legs and knees on as it’s shown in the picture.
2. How to put out an electrical or oil fire

Electrical fires and oil fires are different from forest fires, so using water to put them out is not effective.
- Leave the pot where it is and don’t try to move it.
-
Turn off your oven. Put on an oven mitt to protect your skin.
-
Cover the flame with a metal lid, but avoid using a ceramic one.
-
Use baking soda to put out small fires. Salt can also work, but don’t use baking powder.
-
Don’t swat at a fire with a towel or any fabric. Don’t use water either.
3. How to behave while having a heart attack

If you recognize any symptoms of a heart attack or just have a suspicion that you may be experiencing one, do the following.
- Stop what you’re doing, especially if you’re driving or exercising.
-
Call emergency services first, then a friend or relative.
-
Sit down with your knees bent upward to improve circulation. Your tailbone should be placed several inches away from the wall. Don’t try to stay up.
-
Take slow, deep breaths.
4. How to protect yourself during a fire

5. How to open a can without any tools in a forest

Even if you’ve lost your friends in the woods who have all the necessary equipment or your opener breaks, then this is not a reason to panic. Canned food can be opened without a knife.
1. Find a flat stone surface.
2. Take the canned food and start rubbing it against the stone until the lid can be easily pushed through.
6. How to behave during a car accident

- While driving a car, place both hands on the steering wheel in the “10 and 2 o’clock” positions.
- The impact of your car hitting something triggers the airbag system, so don’t block the wheel because it may cause serious injury. Some experts recommend placing your hands at the “9 and 3 o’clock” positions during the impact as a new way to protect yourself.
- Stay in a normal driving position and avoid hunching or ducking since vehicle safety systems are designed to protect you in this position.
