8 Habits That Can Tell Strangers Too Much About You

After many tests and lots of paperwork, researchers have noticed some connections between habits and personality traits. Punctuality, the way a person carries a bag, or how one attaches a roll of toilet paper can say a little more about character than you think. In fact, you can become a modern Sherlock Holmes and surprise someone with not-so-obvious conclusions based on their everyday habits.

We at Bright Side decided to learn more about habits and want to share some of our curious findings with you.

1. The way you usually wear your bag

In an interview, a body language expert shared that the way you usually carry your bag can reveal some curious things about you.

  1. If your bag hangs on your elbow with your arm bent: Typically, this is a position for professional women. It projects confidence and royals often hold their bags like this.
  2. You hold your bag under your arm like a clutch: This implies that you’re normally relaxed and not overly concerned about your appearance.
  3. If you hang it over your shoulder: You don’t feel the need to hide anything. It’s also a practical way of carrying bags.
  4. You hold the bag at the bottom, by the handles: This may say something about insecurities because it’s not the most practical way to carry it.

The body language expert adds that these signals are not necessarily true for everyone and they’re not always consistent. However, it’s more telling if a woman carries a bag in a certain way very often as a habit.

2. The way you store your toilet paper

The way you hang your toilet paper roll matters, according to this life coach and doctor. She reveals that it dictates if you have a controlling or relaxed personality. The doctor tested 2,000 men and women and found that those who rolled the toilet paper “over” were more dominant. People who pulled the paper out from underneath turned out to be more submissive.

3. The way you take a selfie

Researchers also found some behavioral patterns in the way one takes a selfie. As it turns out, friendlier people are more likely to take pictures from below. At the same time, more conscientious people are less likely to show a private space in the background.

Personalities who are open to new experiences are more likely to display positive emotions that are more pronounced. Anxious people tend to make a “duck face,” according to researchers.

4. Your walking style

Body language experts noticed the connection between your walking style and your personality. So, slump-shouldered people tend to be sad. And we bounce along if we’re happy. If we change our walk, we can change our mood.

Also, our gait can serve as a cue to vulnerability. Researchers suggest that you can detect a vulnerable person from their walking style. When you tilt your head, it may indicate that you’re sensitive and weak at the moment.

5. Your handshake

A person’s handshake can also be related to some aspects of their personality, as research has shown. People with firm handshakes are more extroverted, so they’re more open to new experiences. They’re also less neurotic and shy than those with limp handshakes.

6. The amount of time you spend on your phone

Scientists have noticed a correlation between a person’s “addiction” to their cell phone and their emotional stability. During the study, participants were asked to rate statements such as, “I spend more time than I should on my cell phone,” and “I get agitated when my cell phone is not in sight.”

As a result, it was discovered that people who were addicted to their phones and spent a lot of time with them tended to be more anxious and neurotic.

7. Your punctuality

Punctuality is a factor that we can appreciate at work. Research has revealed that people who are late to work or leave work early may have less motivation. And the same can be said for the opposite — if you’re always on time, you have good motivation. But it’s important to make people leave when working hours are over because staying late can make you feel exhausted.

8. Your nervous ticks

Scientists filmed people during various situations and watched their reactions. Results showed that those who had high perfectionist tendencies were more likely to show signs of stress, frustration, and boredom.

This may be because perfectionists are more likely to do something over nothing.

What habits do you have? In your opinion, which habits can say a lot about one’s personality?

I used to get frustrated if the toilet paper roll was not over. Now I put it on however I had it in my hand. There used to be plenty of things I used to get bent out of shape over, including other drivers. Once I allowed others and myself to make mistakes my stress has gone down. I do like order, I just dialed it back a little for my own sanity.

It is not to say I don’t get frustrated with myself for making mistakes, I just try not to let it negatively affect my health anymore. Next step is to not let it affect my confidence either.
