When we’re watching our favorite movies, we find it very hard to imagine anyone else portraying the characters. But most bigger roles have several famous actors competing to land the part, or sometimes the person who was initially considered by the directors turns down being cast.

We at Bright Side made a list of 12 iconic roles that could have been portrayed by other actors and actresses.

1. Liam Hemsworth was almost cast as Thor.

Although the role eventually went to his brother, Chris Hemsworth, Liam was also very close to getting it. Chris revealed in a series of interviews, “My little brother almost got cast as Thor... I think my audition sucked.”

2. Angelina Jolie could have acted in The Aviator.

The famous actress turned down a major role in The Aviator and the opportunity to star next to Leonardo DiCaprio. Although Angelina Jolie didn’t specify which of the supporting roles she was offered, she could’ve portrayed either Katherine Hepburn or Ava Gardner in the biopic — and possibly could’ve won an Oscar for the role.

3. Audrey Hepburn was considered for the lead role in Cleopatra.

Audrey Hepburn was the director’s first choice to play Cleopatra, but the actress turned down the role, as she expressed to the producers of the film that she was trying to get pregnant. The iconic role eventually went to Elizabeth Taylor.

4. Lucy Hale auditioned for Fifty Shades of Grey.

The Pretty Little Liars star tried to get cast as Anastasia Steele, but her audition didn’t go very well, and she was rejected. She wasn’t the only one though, as many other actresses, including Elizabeth Olsen and Shailene Woodley, tried to get cast as well, but only Dakota Johnson made the cut.

5. David Bowie was the director’s choice for the role of Niander Wallace in Blade Runner 2049.

Sadly, David Bowie passed away in 2016, so the casting directors needed to look for someone else to fill the role. They eventually found Jared Leto to play the main antagonist in the movie.

6. Antonio Banderas almost starred in The Phantom of the Opera.

Although Antonio Banderas was eager to accept the main role of the Phantom, he was later rejected for the role that went to Gerard Butler instead.

7. Yvonne Strahovski could have been Captain Marvel.

Ever since the production of Captain Marvel was announced, fans of the superhero franchise had Yvonne Strahovski as their top choice to play the lead. But there were only rumors of her being cast, and she was never offered the role that ended up going to Brie Larson, who did a great job at portraying the superhero.

8. Michael K. Williams almost became Django.

The Quentin Tarantino movie cast Jamie Foxx in the role, but Michael K. Williams was also a strong contender for the part. Michael even met with the director about being cast but was eventually sidelined.

9. Carrie Fisher auditioned for the lead role in Clue.

Carrie Fisher had a funny and memorable audition that impressed the film’s director. But the role of the femme fatale eventually went to Lesley Ann Warren, who gave an equally convincing performance.

10. Nicole Kidman wanted to act in Notting Hill.

The actress really wanted to star alongside Hugh Grant and would have loved Julia Roberts’ part in the romantic movie. But in an interview, Nicole Kidman admitted wanting to be in the film, saying, “I really wanted the role that Julia Roberts played in Notting Hill. But I wasn’t well known enough, and I wasn’t talented enough.”

11. Denzel Washington later regretted turning down the lead role in Se7en.

The actor still regrets turning down the role of detective Mills, but after reading the script for the first time, he just couldn’t imagine himself in the role, so it went to Brad Pitt.

12. Thomas Jane could’ve acted in Mad Men.

The casting directors of Mad Men first approached Thomas Jane with the part but were rejected by him. So later, they ended up hiring Jon Hamm as the charismatic Don Draper.
