Many celebrities stand out for the strange outfits they choose to wear to red carpets and other special events that call for fancy attire. But among all of them, there is a small group of celebrities who went further than that and actually took things to a whole new level by wearing risky designs and even managed to break old dress codes. And in the last 10 years, there were shocking avant-garde getups that became the focus of the press for a long time and even achieved changes both in the entertainment industry and in other social sectors.

Bright Side researched the most talked-about outfits from the last decade along with what motivated the artist or designer to create them.

1. Kate Middleton’s wedding dress

Kate Middleton wore a beautiful wedding dress when she married Prince William in 2011. The design she chose was the perfect combination of a somewhat classic, elegant style with something more modern. It was made by the British label, Alexander McQueen, and the designer conceived a timeless bridal gown made up of beautiful floral lace that bordered the Victorian cut corset. In many respects, it serves as the perfect contrast between tradition and change.

This style was very well received by fashion experts and critics who appreciated the way she combined an avant-garde style with a traditional gown, the latter being inspired by wedding styles from the ’50s. They were also led to note that the design Middleton chose would greatly influence bridal styles in the coming years and even create a whole new trend in the high fashion industry.

2. Billy Porter’s tuxedo dress

Many actors had already tried to change the classic style of elegant suits at gala events, but most of these were modest changes. It was only when Billy Porter went even further at the 2019 Oscars that things really went to a whole new level. Porter wore an ensemble made up of a tuxedo suit on top, paired with a voluminous black velvet skirt on the bottom. He was undoubtedly the star of the night, thus becoming one of the leading figures of activism for a new way of understanding fashion and the message it sends.

3. Angelina Jolie’s bare-legged dress

Angelina Jolie has revolutionized the red carpet at the Oscars several times, but it was in 2012 when she really changed everything. That year, she wore a Versace dress with a strategically cut skirt to show off her right leg.

4. Priyanka Chopra’s red wedding dress

Priyanka Chopra is an actress who, in 2018, married musician, Nick Jonas. In order to celebrate both of their backgrounds, they actually held 2 weddings. In the second one, the bride wore a traditional Indian red dress.

5. Katy Perry’s chandelier dress

Just like Kim Kardashian once stole the show with what came to be known as her “wet” look, Katy Perry dazzled pretty much everyone at the Met Gala in 2019 with an amazing and unique Moschino-branded chandelier costume. The dress was a whole new concept in fashion. It was made with crystal inlays and a structure of electric candles powered by 2 battery packs to illuminate the event with her presence, literally and figuratively.

6. Rita Ora’s white coat

Rita Ora decided to step away from the traditional, classic, luxurious dresses that almost everyone wears to big galas and important events. Instead, she went for something a lot more comfortable: a bathrobe. That’s what she wore to the 2017 MTV Awards, which, of course, caught the attention of everyone there and generated quite a buzz among audiences. However, its purpose was simply to represent a hotel guest relaxing in her room after a refreshing shower, a concept explored by designer Palomo Spain for his Hotel Palomo collection.

7. Ezra Miller’s quilted jacket

For the 2018 premiere of the movie, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, which took place in Paris, actor Ezra Miller dazzled everybody with his bizarre outfit. It was made up of a strange dress and a black quilted jacket, and it came paired with black gloves and very deep red lips. The outfit was created by designer Pierpaolo Piccioli. Clearly, Miller decided to go for something more extravagant and very different from the classic gala styles that men typically wear to these kinds of events.

8. Emma Watson’s plastic dress

Although the dress that Emma Watson wore to the 2016 Met Gala looked just like any other simple dress at first glance, it most certainly was not. Its underlying construction was something that caused a bit of a stir in the press. The outfit was created from reusable plastic bottles, cotton, and satin to encourage the fashion industry to create more ecological garments and minimize the effects of environmental pollution. The idea is to use recyclable materials when designing new clothes.

Would you dare to wear an eye-catching outfit to create a trend? What is it about celebrities’ outfits that catches your attention the most?

The story of Angelina Jolie adopting Maddox from Cambodia is heartwarming. Initially not keen on motherhood, her trip to Cambodia changed her perspective. Maddox’s adoption wasn’t just about adding to her family; it was about connecting with a country and its people.
