Sometimes we’re either too busy or too lazy to go and see a doctor. Whatever the reason is, we definitely shouldn’t rely on our gut feeling. 15 doctors share the weirdest cases they’ve seen in their entire lives, and we can’t help but wonder how the patients got these ideas in the first place.

My patient thought that since Lysol kills influenza, the best way to nip her sinus congestion in the bud was to flush her sinuses with it like a saline spray. It didn’t work. The fact that I didn’t immediately fall over laughing and instead seriously counseled her against ever doing that again is still the greatest feat of composure in my entire career. When the label on Lysol says “not for internal use,” they mean it.

I had a really bad flu once, and both my boyfriend and his mother assured me I could cure it by soaking my socks in apple cider vinegar and wearing them to sleep. I was 4 months pregnant at the time, and highly doubted that wearing wet socks to bed would help, so I went to a doctor instead.

I had a very elderly patient come in with broken hearing aids. He said they were dirty, so he had washed them in the sink with soap and water. Hearing aids aren’t waterproof. Yes, he was warned of this when he got the hearing aids.

We had a patient who refused to let us use the tonometer, the machine used for checking internal ocular pressure to diagnose glaucoma. He said that the puff machine gave you glaucoma, and we weren’t going to pull that on him. He told us his father got an exam and got glaucoma after using that machine. His uncle and brother also had no signs of glaucoma, and after getting the puff test, both people had been diagnosed with the disease.
Glaucoma doesn’t have any outward symptoms before you start going blind. He told me he had a very strong familial disposition to glaucoma and refused to be tested for it.

I had a peds patient come in who was extremely overweight. When asking his mom about his diet, his mother said that he gets his daily dairy from Oreos. I asked, “You mean you give him milk with the Oreos?” She said, “No, Oreos have cream in the middle, so that’s where his dairy comes from.”
