15 People Who Overestimated Their Cooking Abilities

They say cooking is an art, and like all great art, sometimes it gets... abstract. You can measure every ingredient to the gram, follow instructions to the letter, and still end up with a dish that looks like it came from another dimension. But hey, that’s the magic of the kitchen!

  • I saw this Pinterest hack where if you turn a toaster sideways, then put cheese on top of one of the pieces of bread, and toast both pieces of bread in the sideways toaster, the cheese will melt, and you can make a grilled cheese sandwich.
The cheese was melting, but then the toaster timer went off, and the bread popped out of the toaster face down on the ground. I had to clean up the cheese from the ground and had no grilled cheese sandwich. © amao9098 / Reddit
  • One early afternoon, I poured the Diet Pepsi into the thermal mug that had been holding coffee earlier in the day, and apparently, there was an ounce or two of coffee left. It was delicious and refreshing! Now I make these intentionally. © LetUsBeginAnew / Reddit

“This bread my dad made for Thanksgiving. It is cooked.”

  • I creamed sugar and butter together by hand on a beautiful summer day when I had a hankerin for lemon poppyseed loaf. It took an hour since the butter was still a bit hard only to discover that I used salt instead of sugar. Wasted a ton of salt, my last pound of butter and over an hour of my time only to come up empty. © Tederator / Reddit
  • I just finished mixing a 9lb meatloaf and I was in such a hurry that I forgot it is NOT 1 cup of breadcrumbs per lb, but 1/3lb. This thing is really gonna be a meat-loaf. © the-doctor-is-real / Reddit
  • In my freshman year of college, I attempted to make fried rice. I did not steam the rice before attempting to fry it. © transmogrifying / Reddit

“The night my husband made burgers for the first time. He set off the fire alarm 4 times.”

  • I once made roast potatoes after a haircut. After 45 minutes of roasting, I noticed they all had a seasoning of freshly cut hair. When I was bending down to put them back in the oven after turning and checking, stray hairs were falling off my head onto them. © Boswellox91 / Reddit
  • Couldn’t decide what I wanted to eat so just threw sliced chicken in a pot with butter, mushrooms, sliced red peppers and feta cheese. Covered with tin foil and put in the oven. Ate with fries. Amazing. © bonster85 / Reddit

“Too lazy to pipe out macarons. Baked them in a sheet instead.”

  • Taking a pot of spaghetti to the sink to drain it and realizing too late that I didn’t put a colander in first. I literally dumped it down the drain. Luckily, I had more on hand and it was an easy mistake to fix. © Hungry-Blacksmith523 / Reddit
  • I marinated a beautiful flank steak overnight. Just lovely. So many herbs and really nice salt (maldon salt). Misread the recipe as 50 minutes on each side, not 5. I don’t know why my brain didn’t correct this. I just merrily cooked it for nearly two hours. © DKDamian / Reddit

“Girlfriend says that my standard combo of noodles and sardines looks like something straight out of Silent Hill.”

  • Turned on the wrong burner and heated up the cornbread that was in a pyrex pan instead of the saucepan I was trying to heat. It exploded all over the kitchen and into all of the food that I had just taken the lids off of. Potato salad, fruit salad, baked beans, deviled eggs, ribs, and cornbread all full of broken glass. © anotherspicytaco / Reddit
  • I once forgot to remove the little pad from underneath the raw chicken and roasted it for an hour and a half. It melted and was weird and waxy, so I had to toss the whole chicken. © watermarkd / Reddit
  • Had a friend who made a great white chicken chili for football Sunday. He decided he needed to add more chicken and was going to use canned chicken he had in the pantry, but instead added canned tuna. © Menashe3 / Reddit

Everyone has the ability to cook or bake something beautiful. However, things don’t always go as planned and people end up with a bunch of disappointment instead of a tasty meal.
