Boy Who Won Battle Against Cancer Now Tops His Class Despite New Health Problems
Over three years ago, Kaitlin Burge, a mother whose son was diagnosed with cancer, shared a deeply moving photograph. In the picture, her son found solace in the comforting embrace of his older sister during a chemotherapy session. Today, after an arduous and determined fight, little Beckett has conquered his illness and is thriving in school. He even became one of the top students.
It was a difficult time for everyone
On April 25, 2018, at the tender age of 2, Beckett received the heart-wrenching diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. These two siblings, who were just 15 months apart, transitioned from playing joyfully at home to enduring the chilly confines of a hospital room side by side. Beckett’s sister, Aubrey, then a 4-year-old, bore witness to her brother’s agonizing struggle to walk and play.
The situation was tough for everyone, catching the family entirely off guard. However, Kaitlin revealed that they stayed united, leaned on each other, and tackled each day as it came.
Beckett spent 35 days without his sister
According to Kaitlin, Aubrey had a tough time during those 35 days. Beckett, her best friend, was in the hospital, and she didn’t fully understand what was happening, only that something was wrong with her brother.
As expected, the entire family faced tremendous challenges during this period. Kaitlin expressed in the caption of the picture above, “I watched my only son go through so much and still smile.”
On the other hand, this difficult period also helped Aubrey become more independent, as she saw her best friend and brother going through something no sibling should ever experience.
Beckett bravely defeated cancer
With countless challenges along the way, Beckett endured a tough journey but emerged victorious. After two grueling years filled with pain, suffering, and relentless determination, Beckett is free from cancer and attending school. As Kaitlin shared, “He is feeling great, he is done with treatment, and is back to school.”
Beckett completed his last treatment on August 8, 2021, and he’s now in perfect health. Today, at 8 years old, he continues to have his 9-year-old sister steadfastly by his side. Their unbreakable bond, which grew even stronger during Beckett’s illness, remains as strong as ever.
Beckett is now encountering new challenges
“Beckett has conquered cancer like a brave little soldier. However, this third-grader now faces new challenges. After his treatment, he was diagnosed with ADHD.
Furthermore, Beckett also needs to see an oncologist for persistent headaches. He has also been experiencing heart racing and chest pains.
“We saw a cardiologist for a second opinion who confirmed his PVCs but has placed a monitor on him for 30 days to track his heart pattern and symptoms. It’s a waiting game, but at least it’s a step closer to figuring out what’s going on with little man,” said Kaitlin.
Beckett is thriving in school
Beckett is now in third grade. Despite all the new challenges he has to face, he is doing well in school. He has been thriving since returning to school. He loves math and spelling. His mom opened up about how proud she is of how hardworking Beckett is in school.
“Straight A’s for this guy! I’m so proud of him. He was at a disadvantage, he missed almost all of kindergarten and half of first grade. He’s thriving in 2nd. We were advised to hold him back in kindergarten again per his doctor because of what he went through, and we opted to not. I knew what he was capable of,” wrote Kaitlin.
“He was struggling, and it was obvious. He had the best 1st-grade teacher and has an amazing 2nd-grade teacher who really work hard with him. He’s so smart. He loves math and spelling. Beckett, you continue to amaze me. You’re destined for great things,” she continued.
Not only is Beckett thriving in class, but he is also excelling in sports. He even won the ball game at his school.
“Another win in the books for the Yankees! Beckett got his first hit of the season, got on first base, and WON the game ball! He stayed out of the dirt the entire game, was focused, and played left field, shortstop, and third base! I’m so proud,” Kaitlin said.
Sticking together through thick and thin
Beckett’s journey was incredibly draining, but we recognize that many others are traveling a similar road. When we asked Kaitlin to offer words of encouragement to those facing similar challenges, she emphasized the importance of staying positive, taking it one day at a time, and reaching out for support when needed. She reminded us that this is just one chapter in life, and the strength to persevere can always be found within.
Beckett’s remarkable odyssey has showcased resilience and the strength of family bonds. As Kaitlin’s words of encouragement remind us, challenges may be tough, but they represent just one segment of our life’s story. With determination and a support system, we can overcome anything that comes our way.
