While the exact timeline of Keanu and Alexandra’s romantic relationship is unclear, Grant’s friend, popular actress Jennifer Tilly, revealed in 2020 that the pair had been together romantically for years, much longer than fans thought. She also claimed that Alexandra had referred to Keanu as her “boyfriend.” But it was only in 2020 that the couple officially addressed the rumors surrounding their relationship.

Keanu Reeves’ romance with his girlfriend, Alexandra Grant, is admired by many because, from an external view, it appears to be a well-balanced and wholesome connection. In a recent interview, Grant offered a unique perspective on their relationship, revealing her ease with sharing the glamorous red-carpet moments with Reeves:

“The good news about falling in love as an adult is that I had built my own career by the time that my relationship had begun,” she tells PEOPLE. “I feel very confident in the relationship on the red carpet. I feel confident on it alone.”

Alexandra Grant also discussed the mutual support and inspiration that she and Reeves provide for one another as artists:

“What I love about Keanu and our exchange is that we’re pushing each other to build new roads,” she says. “Seeing the other person’s problem-solving is inspiring, like, ‘Oh, well, okay, this one, that’s a cul-de-sac. How do I try this other thing?’ ”“He’s such an inspiration to me,” she adds. “He’s so creative, he’s so kind. He works so hard.”

She also emphasizes that “storytelling is at the heart” of both her and her boyfriend’s endeavors. She adds that her art has “absolutely” changed since she began dating Reeves.

“My work is much more of a private performance, but I have a text that I interpret in the studio into a painting, into an object,” she says. “He takes the text in private and then turns it into a performance in public. There’s a relationship. We’re both at the heart readers and researchers. We both care about people and we care about characters.”

Just like in the most fulfilling relationships, Grant and Reeves’ partnership seems to contribute to their personal growth and individual pursuits, even when working apart.

It’s finally a joyous time for Reeves.

Reeves had endured a painful past as he grew up with an absent father who served time in prison. Moreover, Reeves’ sister Kim was diagnosed with leukemia in 1991. And the actor gave up 70% of his The Matrix income for leukemia research and even auctioned a date with himself. It was also hard for him to lose his good friend, actor and musician River Phoenix, at age 23 in 1993.

Furthermore, Reeves and former girlfriend Jennifer Syme lost their daughter Ava, who was stillborn, in 1999. The couple split when the grief became too much to bear for them, but remained friends until her untimely death in 2001 from a car crash.
