I Refuse to Do My Coworker’s Job for Free—So I Made Him Pay

How is that the same thing? HE called in sick. If he had checked the schedule ahead of time, he should have known that he was supposed to pull a double. If Lila had the authority to access the schedule and change it, she was not doing anything other than letting Sam know that he needs to work more than he planned on. If she didn't have the authority, then she was risking her own employment. Teaching him a lesson should not be necessary, but perhaps he has done that more than a few times. As a rule, at least when I worked in a hotel (almost 30 years ago), the manager was responsible to cover the abandoned (that is what we called it) shift, not other workers. I don't know how it is done now.
1. Reflect on motivation
- It might be best to take a moment and ask yourself why you reacted this way. Frustration and anger are natural, but acting out of revenge can have consequences, both professionally and personally. Mindfully considering your motives can help you decide if similar actions are worth the risk.

It might be best to use this experience to set healthier systems (documenting issues, requesting formal shift policies, or seeking managerial support) so you don’t feel the need for extreme measures again.
