“My Legal Name Is Mrs. Affleck,” Jennifer Lopez Defends Her Choice to Take Ben’s Last Name

Jennifer Lopez recently dropped a bombshell when she revealed that her official name had become Jennifer Affleck after marrying her equally famous sweetheart. However, for people who see her as the epitome of an empowered and independent woman, her choice to follow traditional gender roles might seem a bit off. So she decided to clear things up once and for all.

In an interview with Vogue, the legendary singer talked in depth about why she chose to take her husband’s last name and addressed the controversy it caused. She started by saying, “People are still going to call me Jennifer Lopez. But my legal name will be Mrs. Affleck because we’re joined together. We’re husband and wife.”

Apparently, some people questioned Jennifer’s feminist stance and even suggested that Affleck is the one who should’ve changed his name to Ben Lopez. But the mere idea of that seemed incredibly wrong to her: “No! It’s not traditional. It doesn’t have any romance to it.”

In reality, Lopez is the very traditional type, especially when it comes to marriage, so she wanted to do everything right. She sees the act of sharing a name with her husband as empowering on its own, explaining, “It feels like it’s a power move, you know what I mean? I’m very much in control of my own life and destiny and feel empowered as a woman and as a person.”

In the end, the singer wants the naysayers to agree to disagree with her because she cannot be happier about her choice. “I just feel like it’s romantic. It still carries tradition and romance to me, and maybe I’m just that kind of girl,” she said.

Even though the Afflecks insist their marriage is highly traditional, they still have a soft spot for a little edge. The 2 lovebirds’ bond is so strong that they even got matching tattoos, which makes us hope we all can find that special person to do the same thing with.

this still feels weird to me because in Spain we don't take the husband's name. actually we have two last names one from our father and one from our mother and that can hardly change. I like it this way
