Zooey Deschanel, best known for her role as Jess in the television series, New Girl, and the leading actress in the movie, (500 Days) of Summer, is not just a successful actress and singer. She is also a mother to 2 beautiful children and employs a unique co-parenting technique with her ex-husband and boyfriend, proving that divorce doesn’t mean parents can’t remain cordial.

Zooey Deschanel’s journey as a mother began when she met her ex-husband, film producer Jacob Pechenik, in January 2015. By June of that same year, the 2 were married and went on to have 2 beautiful children— Elsie Otter in 2015, and Charlie Wolf in 2017. However, in 2019, the couple announced their separation and the divorce would be finalized in 2020.

According to Deschanel, during the divorce, everything was “always a little touch-and-go kind of stuff. We were doing mediation, no lawyers or anything.” Despite the divorce, it was very important for the couple that things remain cordial for the sake of their children, who ended up going back and forth between the 2 parents. In a press statement in June 2020, they stated that they “remained committed to their children.”

Zooey Deschanel started dating Jonathan Scott in 2019.

Deschanel ended up meeting her current boyfriend, Property Brothers star Jonathan Scott, during the filming of an episode of Carpool Karaoke in 2019 while she was going through her separation. The 2 officially started dating after her divorce was finalized. In the divorce settlement, Deschanel and Scott were granted joint custody of their children.

The actress is infamously private about her children and does not post many pictures of them. However, she doesn’t shy away from expressing the fact that she loves them and wants what’s best for them. Although she and her husband separated due to “irreconcilable differences,” they still maintain a friendly relationship for the sake of their children and employ a unique co-parenting technique.

Deschanel’s parenting style is certainly unique but effective.

In a recent post on Instagram on Father’s Day, Deschanel posted a rare yet adorable photo of her children sitting on the shoulders of her ex-husband and boyfriend, captioning it: “So thankful my kids have these 2 awesome guys in their lives.” The picture features her children’s faces hidden with heart emojis, sitting on the shoulders of her ex-husband and boyfriend.

In response, her ex-husband commented: “It’s my absolute greatest privilege.” Scott also commented: “One big happy family.”

The actress shared that they all feel extremely fortunate doing things this way. “The kids are so happy when we’re all together. So we just try to as much as possible.” The actress also said her boyfriend Jonathan was also great with the children, which was very lucky for her.

The 3 have shared many heartwarming moments together with the children.

Deschanel gave an example of her son’s birthday to show how her parenting style has worked out great. She shared how her boyfriend booked an Elmo performer on Zoom and her husband came over to watch it together with them. “It was just the 3 of us and the 2 kids, and we’re watching this Elmo performer on Zoom, and the kids are so happy we were all together.”

Her ex-husband continues to play an active role in their children’s lives.

In another Instagram post with the children, her ex-husband said, “There is nothing more magical than being a father! Happy Dad Day, everyone!” He continues to have an active part in the children’s lives, and the 3 have found a great way to raise the kids together and provide them with care and affection.
