6 Hair Care Mistakes You May Be Making

Washing and drying your hair seems like a no-brainer. But there are actually lots of mistakes many of us may be making that can sabotage our hair’s health. Maybe your hair care routine is a simple wash-with-shampoo-every-now-and-then process. Or maybe you think you’re doing everything right, but your hair still doesn’t look its best. Turns out, some hair care mistakes you might be unknowingly making can be standing between you and the hair of your dreams.

We at Bright Side were surprised to find out how easy it is to get things wrong when it comes to the hair care process. And we gathered some common mistakes that might be keeping you from having gorgeous hair.

1. You’re washing your hair the wrong way.

Washing your hair while standing up in the shower might be convenient, but shampooing it upside down can actually offer more benefits. If you have long hair, washing it upside down makes it easier for you to apply cleansing products to the hidden layers of your hair. If you have sensitive, acne-prone skin, rinsing your hair upside down can help to prevent breakouts, as it keeps hair care products and oil from your hair from getting on your neck and back and irritating your skin.

2. You’re using dry shampoo only on dirty hair.

Using dry shampoo is a great way to refresh your hair when you don’t have time to take a shower, but it can actually do much more than simply de-grease your locks. If you have fine hair, spraying some dry shampoo at the roots can give it an instant boost and make it appear fuller. But don’t overdo it because using dry shampoo too often can lead to product buildup on your scalp and cause it to itch.

3. You’re using hair conditioner for too long.

Applying hair conditioner is an essential step in your hair care routine, as it protects your hair cuticle and makes your strands smoother and easier to detangle. But when it comes to leaving it on your hair, less is more. Applying hair conditioner for too long can weigh your locks down and cause them to look greasy. Leaving the conditioner on your hair for no longer than 3 minutes is just enough to reap all of its benefits.

4. You stick to the same shampoo.

When you finally find the shampoo that does wonders for your hair, it’s tempting to use it all the time. But your hair actually gets used to the same products over time, and eventually, they simply stop working. Rather than stocking up on shampoo that used to make your hair look gorgeous, invest in 2 or 3 different shampoos and conditioners and switch them up depending on weather, water quality, and the way your hair feels.

5. You’re putting your hair in a bun when it’s wet.

You just stepped out of the shower, your hair is soaking wet, and putting it in a ponytail or a bun looks like a convenient way to keep your hair off your face. But this seemingly harmless habit can actually damage your strands and cause them to break off. Because the hair is most vulnerable when it’s wet, too much strain on it can weaken it and lead to breakage.

6. You’re not brushing your hair before you wash it.

We’re all familiar with the annoying feeling of knotted wet hair that’s hard to detangle. But rather than combing your hair after washing it, give it a brush through before hopping in the shower. This can help to prevent knots and keep your strands tangle-free for longer.

I damaged my hair from wearing it in a tight bun nearly every day for months at a time over the past few years. I thought I'd try something to help with hair growth at my hairline. I've only been using Hair Growth Serum From DermalMD for 2 weeks now and am already seeing an improvement.
