5 Movies or TV Series Wardrobes That Are More Than Just a Pretty Costumes

Filmmaking is a complicated process that consists of many departments operating together to bring stories to life. One of these departments, costume design, is probably among the most important ones. Designers come up with witty solutions to make the lives of the actors easier during the shooting process. And through the clothes, the design team is able to provide the stories we love with another deep layer.

1. Sylvie’s costume in Loki is mom-friendly.

It’s not easy to be a mom and work full-time. However, there are always solutions that can make combining those 2 parts of a woman’s life easier. The designers of Marvel Studios inserted zippers in Sophia Di Martino’s costume, so she could, with no effort, pump and nurse her child.

“Little (big) things like this that made it possible for me to do my job and be a parent,” said Di Martino about her costume. “I’m forever grateful.”

2. It’s not that easy to drink in a Spider-Man costume.

Sometimes, costumes are assembled so complexly that it becomes hard for actors to do ordinary things, such as eat and drink. While it’s not that easy to take the costume off every time the actor wants to drink some water, designers have found solutions for this. Tom Holland, a.k.a. Spider-Man, explained how it works.

Basically, the eyes of the Spider-Man costume are made of glass. “And what I can do is I can take my left one out, and there’s a little thing I pull out, and then I put a tube, a squeezy tube, down into my mouth, and then I can drink from a bottle,” Holland shared.

3. The clothes in Little Women help you read between the lines.

The fact that Jo and Laurie didn’t end up together probably broke the hearts of many fans.

However, if their romance ended before it even began, it doesn’t mean that the 2 of them didn’t have a special connection. And the director intentionally highlighted this connection through the costumes. Saoirse Ronan, who played Jo, and Timothée Chalamet, who depicted Laurie, were told to swap their clothes on set to resemble each other and capture the bond they had.

4. Voldemort’s robe indicated his power.

The designers of the Harry Potter franchise also used clothes to convey hidden messages to viewers. For example, Lord Voldemort’s robe faded each time one of the Horcruxes was destroyed as a symbol of Voldemort himself fading away.

5. Paul Bettany’s costume had an additional cooling system.

Sometimes, to get an incredible on-screen look, actors have to struggle a bit. That being said, Paul Bettany, who played Vision in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, had to wear a suit that was unbearably tight and hot to wear. However, a tricky solution saved Bettany from the heat. “The suit has this piping that goes all around me, and they plug it in, and ice water runs through it,” the actor recalled.
