People often think that famous actors and musicians spend their time rehearsing, playing, composing, or doing things related to their artistic career. However, a few of the world’s most well-known artists have actually managed to combine their passion with a regular job, making their life even more intriguing.

Bright Side checked the “B-sides” of many singers, actors, and composers’ lives and found 9 examples of famous people who, on top of shining in their careers, have found time to master other common professions.

1. Brian May, astronomer

After spending a few years touring around the world with one of the most famous rock groups, Queen, Brian May used all the energy he had left after performing in concerts and rehearsals to study astronomy. In 2007, Queen’s lead guitarist obtained his Ph.D. in astrophysics and even had the chance to collaborate in one of NASA’s space missions to reveal the topography of the furthest object we’ve seen from Earth so far.

2. Mayim Bialik, neuroscientist

Mayim Balik’s dedication to giving a great performance as Amy, one of the main characters in The Big Bang Theory didn’t prevent her from becoming a neuroscientist. She studied for 7 years on the side in addition to her job as an actor. And in her free time, she even creates content for her own YouTube channel that has about a million subscribers.

3. Bruce Dickinson, pilot

Bruce Dickinson is considered one of the best frontmen in the history of heavy metal. But for someone with such ambition and energy, it’s simply not enough. Iron Maiden’s lead singer is also a professional fencer and has been named as one of the best competitors of the sport in the U.K. Dickinson is also passionate about flying, and even worked as a captain for a commercial aviation company.

4. Steve Buscemi, firefighter

Actor, producer, director — the list goes on. But Steve Buscemi isn’t only known for his work in the film industry. When he was younger, he actually worked as a firefighter for the New York Fire Department. One of his most honorable actions was when he volunteered for 12-hour shifts for an entire week to help find survivors after the 9/11 attacks. Buscemi is highly committed to his career and was appointed Honorary Battalion Chief.

5. Tom Selleck, farmer

Best known for appearing in modern TV classics like Magnum P.I., Tom Selleck has been nominated for an Emmy several times. His performance as Thomas Magnum landed him a Golden Globe and an Emmy for Best Actor. He then decided to leave Hollywood for a while to become an avocado farmer in a 60-acre ranch in California where he lives with his family.

6. Katheryn Winnick, bodyguard and black belt in martial arts

Internationally known as Lagertha for her excellent performance in the series Vikings, Winnick doesn’t only fight on the small screen. When she was younger, Winnick obtained a black belt in both taekwondo and karate. Actually, she is a certified bodyguard and has opened several martial arts schools in Canada, her native land.

7. Dexter Holland, molecular biologist

When Dexter Holland became a professional musician, he didn’t have a lot of time left for his studies so he dropped out. But following the success of his band, The Offspring, the frontman and guitarist managed to obtain his biology diploma. In addition, he kept studying until he obtained his Ph.D. in molecular biology.

8. Cole Sprouse, archeologist and photographer

Despite his early success in The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, which he acted in along with his brother Dylan, Cole Sprouse didn’t stop there. After working in other movies and TV shows, he chose to focus on his studies instead of acting. In 2015, he graduated from NYU and became an archeologist. He even participated in some excavations. He also has a passion for photography and often works as a fashion photographer for important magazines such as Vogue.

9. Liam Gallagher, owner of a brand of clothing

Not only is he a reference to ’90s British pop, but the former Oasis member Liam Gallagher dared to step into the business waters and create his own brand of clothing, Pretty Green. Gallagher’s intention was to unite people who love music and fashion under the same brand. In some of his solo shows, he wears his brand’s clothing to promote them.

Aside from farmer, none of these are regular jobs. Some examples of regular jobs: cashier, delivery person, janitor, telemarketer, salesperson, waiter/waitress, housekeeper. Having college education alone is already quite privileged. All of these are artistic, academic, sports, or otherwise extraordinary jobs!
