10 Celebs Who Care More About This World Than Money

We are used to seeing stars as unreachable people, but they are often much closer to us than we think. Many of them engage with others by using their fame and their money to improve the lives of thousands of people around the world every year, creating special scholarships, or spending their holidays comforting people.

Bright Side wants to show you a lesser known side of your favorite celebrities, which maybe you don’t know about yet.

1. JK Rowling

Author of the record-breaking, multi-award-winning Harry Potter novels, J.K. Rowling became Founder and Life President of Lumos in 2014. The association mainly works with children offering them a better future. Through her charitable trust, Volant, J.K. Rowling supports a number of other causes that have to do with social deprivation, particularly concerned with women, children, and young people at risk.

2. Stormzy

Stormzy has announced that he will fund 2 black British students to go to the University of Cambridge. The Stormzy Scholarship will pay for tuition fees and provide a maintenance grant for up to 4 years of an undergraduate degree. The rapper says: “It’s so important for black students, especially, to be aware that it can 100% be an option to attend a university of this caliber.”

3. Elton John

Sir Elton John has seen many of his close friends die from HIV/AIDS over the years, and established the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) in 1992 to try to stop the spread of the disease around the world. Every year, the music legend opens his house to hundreds of celebrities and invited guests for a themed “White Tie and Tiara” ball to raise money for the foundation, and also holds post-Grammy and post-Oscar parties as fundraisers.

4. Emma Watson

Emma Watson has donated £1m ($1.265 million) to the UK Justice and Equality Fund for a new campaign aiming to help those affected by sexual harassment. Nearly 200 female British and Irish stars signed an open letter calling for an end to sexual harassment in the workplace. In addition to this, the Harry Potter star supports different causes each year, in particular those concerning children, civil rights, and conservation.

5. Chris Martin

The lead singer of Coldplay, Chris Martin, reportedly donates 10% of his annual income to charity. In 2017 Coldplay gave their support to the charity Moas (Migrant Offshore Aid Station), that save women and men who try to cross near and far seas every day in search of a better life in the Mediterranean.

6. Meghan Markle

With her husband Prince Harry, Meghan Markle officially supports 7 non-profit organizations around the world. She is also a longstanding counselor for the charity One Young World, which gathers young leaders from around the world and advocates for women’s healthcare worldwide, and a global ambassador for World Vision, the world’s largest international children’s charity, with whom she traveled to Rwanda to see first-hand the importance of clean water.

7. Adele

During a break from music in 2017, Adele spent a lot of time doing under the radar charity work with disadvantaged young Londoners. In July of that year, the singer was seen at Grenfell Tower comforting people less than 24 hours after the blaze ripped through the building, killing 72. Most recently she was praised by perinatal health experts and campaigners for highlighting the issue of postpartum psychosis in new mothers after she shared a moving post by her friend, Laura Dockrill.

8. Ellen DeGeneres

Television host Ellen DeGeneres supports numerous organizations and has won many awards for her charitable efforts. Recently, DeGeneres learned about an organization called The Gentle Barn, a home and hospital for animals that have been abused. On her website, DeGeneres urges her viewers to donate. With Ben Affleck, DeGeneres launched the “Small Change Campaign” to benefit Feeding America.

9. Madonna

In 2006 Madonna and Michael Berg founded Raising Malawi, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping with the extreme poverty and hardships borne by millions of Malawi’s orphans, mainly through health and education planning. She actively gives money to many causes relating to children, and is a patron of Children of Peace.

10. Akon

Akon Lighting Africa is a project that was started in 2014 by the music artist Akon, along with Samba Bathily and Thione Niang which aims to provide electricity through solar energy in Africa. Their initial technique is to install solar street lights and small energy systems. The projects have provided electricity in 14 African countries as of 2015 and employed over 5,000 people, and Akon said they have reached one million households with their projects in African nations.
