13 Celebrities Who Embraced Their Flaws and Got Real About Loving Their Bodies
If you look into our fascination with celebrities, you may find that they represent a certain “beacon of success” for ordinary people. We love to copy those who are graced with fame and fortune, but some of them can be particularly influential thanks to all their stories about overcoming a bad hand that life had dealt them.
At Bright Side, we love a good success story but we also love it when celebrities prove to be more than just a fashion icon and can show examples of self-love and acceptance. That being said, we’ve put together a list of celebrities we admire for that particular reason.
Karolina Kurkova
Czech model, Karolina Kurkova is best known for her performance in Victoria’s Secret’s underwear show. But if you’ve ever looked closely at her pictures (although not in magazines because it gets photoshopped), you’ve probably noticed that the lovely lady has no belly button. This is due to a childhood surgery, most probably fixing a hernia. That doesn’t spoil her looks at all though.
Melanie Gaydos
Having a genetic disease that alters your whole appearance may break a lot of people, but Melanie Gaydos has embraced it. The 28-year-old model has ectodermal dysplasia and she is almost blind and bald due to alopecia — yet she is in high in demand in the modeling world. Melanie has modeled for Eugenio Recuenco, Galore magazine, Cosmopolitan, and walked for Nina Athanasiou at New York Fashion Week.
Megan Fox
Whoever thought that one of the hottest actresses in Holywood had no flaws will be surprised to learn about the form of her thumbs and fingers — Megan Fox suffers from clubbed thumbs. Allegedly, the stunning actress used to have low self-esteem because of it, before learning to appreciate her body in its full form.
Sylvester Stallone
We may argue about the acting ability of Mr. Stallone, but no one can argue that he has become an icon of the ’90s film industry. But before that, he had to overcome the struggle of damaged nerves in his face — one half of it barely moves, which gave his character Rambo his signature expression.
Seal
It’s hard to overlook the flaw that landed Seal on this list since it’s right on his face — and if you have ever thought this was a result of a bad acne problem, you were wrong. Seal suffers from a type of lupus — discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE).
It’s a chronic skin condition that involves inflammation and scarring of the skin which is exposed to the sun.
Paola Antonini
In 2014 this stunning young lady lost a part of her leg after being run over by a drunk driver. But in a situation where a lot of people would’ve given up, she rose above it, landed a great modeling career and is now an advocate for body positive lifestyles. And look how much joy is in her pictures!
Lily Allen
This extremely talented singer has a lot of risky costumes in her shows, photo shoots and on the red carpet. She usually has cleavage so low that you can see her little deformity — a third nipple.
Kate Bosworth
Kate Bosworth took over our hearts with her performance in 21, The Horse Whisperer and Young Americans. And you can’t take your eyes off her, even though her own eyes are kind of... interesting. Kate lives with a condition called heterochromia, which makes one of her eyes blue and the other one blue and brown.
Andy Garcia
It may sound like a story from a book, but the beloved Andy Garcia was actually born with a conjoined twin attached at his shoulder, and in his beach pictures you may find a scar left from a surgery from years ago. This never stopped him from playing all those gangsters though.
Gerard Butler
Gerard Butler had to have a surgery as a child to correct his tinnitus, leaving his ear sticking out. So much so, that it had to be glued in place by makeup people working on the set of the Tomb Raider movie.
Milo Ventimiglia
We’ve all fallen in love with the star of This is Us, but he didn’t leave this same impression in his earlier acting years. His lip does not move properly due to bad nerve function. Basically, his upper lip doesn’t have a sense of touch.
Miles Teller
The 31-year-old actor has very noticeable scars on his face and since the face is an actor’s biggest tool we are happy that it didn’t stop him in his career. Who would want to miss out on his brilliant performance in Whiplash or The Spectacular Now?
Owen Wilson
We have mentioned already that facial features are crucial for actors in their career, yet one more celebrity swimming against the tide is Owen Wilson — his notorious nose is a result of multiple fractures. Also, it’s kind of his trademark.
