They say that good deeds are returned, but sometimes life unfolds in such a way that you don't know how to react. Sometimes the good is returned with gratitude, but in other times, completely opposite reactions take place. In this article, we put together stories about people who faced very different reactions to help.

  • I was traveling in a tram and at one of the stops an old man, about 85-90 years old, got in. I stood up to give up my seat to him, and he asked me whether I was getting off or just giving up my seat. I say that I just give up my seat, so he sits down happily, gets into his bag, and immediately pulls out a bunch of daffodils and gives them to me. He made my day. © Ward 6 / VK
  • A guy I know asked me to help pour the screed in his flat. I came and saw that the rails were installed crookedly and out of level. He waved his hand, saying that it didn't matter. Then his laminate flooring started to split and burst because of the crooked floor. Later I found out that this guy was telling others that I am ham-handed and that he shouldn't have asked me to help because now his laminate flooring is all wobbly. © Spoonful of tar / Dzen
  • I once ordered underwear from an online shop. A guy arrived and he didn't have change. He ran to the shop, changed the money, and gave me the change, but forgot to take the payment. I ran after him outside and gave him the money. He thanked me for a long time, but that was not all. The next day I went to the supermarket, put my purchases into the bag, and dropped my wallet with money into the trolley without noticing. • I was coming home from work late at night, and there was a poster at the entrance, "A cat is missing." I entered the building and saw this very frightened cat. I started to call the owners and said that I would keep watch so that he wouldn't run away. A guy and a girl arrived, caught the fluffy one, and thanked me. An hour later the doorbell rang, and they brought me a cake and peaches. I didn't even expect anything, but it was nice. © Margaret Wolska / Dzen
  • About 10 years ago, I was working as a waiter. Our restaurant offered a set lunch, and some old man came in, asked the price, sighed, and was about to leave. I felt sorry for him, so I fed him and paid for the lunch myself. The manager scolded me, saying that they would never stop coming now, but what was done couldn't be undone. And in the evening, an ordinary-looking guy left me a very big amount for a tip. At that time I needed money very badly to pay off my rent and my debt. And this amount was enough for everything. © Katya Savchenko
  • My mom was in the hospital, and one of our relatives paid for her treatment. He didn't take any money from us. I was so grateful to him that in return I decided to forgive a debt to a coworker who had asked me to lend her money for rent. On the same day, when I was working in the women's clothing department, one of the customers bought an expensive sundress from me, although it was a few sizes smaller, she decided that she would remake it. Thanks to that, I got a good salary that day and I suspect it was a bonus for me for doing the good deed. © Madeleine Dutova
  • I was at a food store, and this woman in front of me was buying a bag of apples, but her card got declined, so I asked the cashier if I could pay for it, the woman was very thankful and then disappeared into the store leaving me and the cashier looking at each other like, "What's going on?" The woman came back with lots of stuff and I said I would pay for her apples, not tons of more groceries and she got pissed, walked out leaving all her groceries, and said I was selfish and rude. © Mateba6 / Reddit
  • A girl walked out of the subway in front of me. She wore stiletto heels, and one of them lost its protector. I tried to tell her about it because I felt sorry that her shoes would be ruined. The young lady was wearing headphones, so to draw her attention I had to touch her sleeve. As a result, the girl, without taking out her headphones, proudly declared that she didn't get acquainted in the street, and kept on walking, finishing her heel against the pavement. © Alexander / Dzen
  • I decided to organize my wardrobe and give away everything I didn't need. I posted an ad online and then it started: I live far away, the time is inconvenient, can you bring it yourself and stuff like that. Terrible! One lady got offended that I dared to give the jacket to someone else, even though she was ready to come for it from a faraway place. © Palata 6 / VK
  • Several years ago I was at a convenience store, and an older lady around her seventies was standing outside, watching the pouring rain and waiting for a taxi that had never come for her. She said she didn't know what to do, and she had a bunch of bags. I drove her home, unloaded her groceries, and brought them to her porch. And then she warned me not to steal any. © Glittering-Grocery39 / Reddit
  • I went to a cosmetics store recently and saw a promotion: buy 1, get 1 free. All this without cheating or overpricing. I bought something and texted my friends about it. Then one of them called and suggested that we go there together to pick up something for two of us. I agreed. In the store, I took a shampoo, balm, and lotion. And the friend was silent and didn't take anything. At the cash register, I paid for everything. And then she calmly took my bag and put half of my purchases into her bag. And seeing my shocked face, she said, "What do you care? The second one is free." © Palata 6 / VK
  • Not in my job description but my most recent former employer told me to find him a painter. I brought him one. He and the painter could not agree on pay and the painter walked off the job. Guy started treating me like the single most incompetent employee ever, threatened to fire me, and spent all damn morning watching my every move from the security cams. And stopping me every time I walked past the front desk to drill me about something. I went into a panic attack before lunch, went home, and never went back. © KhajitCaravan / Reddit
  • Found a cat near my door on the staircase, obviously domestic and terrified. I let it into my home because there are a lot of dogs living in our building. I put a poster in the elevator about the lost cat. A couple of days later, my neighbor practically broke into my place, accusing me of stealing her cat. She shouted so loudly that even another neighbor came out to calm her down. © pastila** / Dzen
  • An old lady was standing in the line to the cashier in front of me in the supermarket. She immediately put her groceries into the bag, piled them all up there, and then started to pay - and then she realized that she didn't have enough. The cashier offered to remove some of the purchases, but the customer refused categorically. She started asking why the amount was so large. In general, the process began to drag on. And I had a 2-year-old son sitting in the stroller who wanted a Kinder Surprise very badly, which I was just about to buy. Long story short, I offered her to add some money. And you know what happened next? She started shouting that I wanted to insult her and that she had the money. She said I could go home with her and she would show me that she had money. Then she said that she didn't need these purchases and that she was buying them for some nurse. I was so embarrassed. I decided it was better not to help anyone if not asked. © Sea of Rain / ADME
  • My friend Irene got divorced, she wasn't doing well on her own, and I had a friend Max who also recently broke up with his girlfriend. I decided to arrange a date for them, and it went well. Then one day, when my husband was on a business trip and I had just given birth, a socket in the flat caught fire. My husband said to call Max, he's an electrician. He came, and my friend later told my husband that Max and I had an affair. We ended up in a scandal and divorce. I asked her later why she lied, and she told me that it was not fair that I have a good husband and a friend who comes to my aid when I need it. And then she even dared to ask why I stopped communicating with her. Later, Max told my husband that there was nothing between us, and my husband and I are now raising 2 children. © my life / Dzen
