10+ Swimsuits That Became Iconic Thanks to the Movies
All of us love movies that are aesthetically pleasing. And we don’t need any CGI to enjoy them. All the creators need to do is include a scene in the water. It’s impossible to look away from the amazing scenery and famous actresses wearing spectacular swimsuits.
We at Bright Side decided to remember female characters that wore swimsuits and became iconic.
Pola — How to Marry a Millionaire (1953)
In How to Marry a Millionaire, Marylin Monroe wore an incredible one-piece swimsuit. Even though it’s not trendy anymore, some girls still want one today — they even sew it themselves.
Marianne — The Swimming Pool (1969)
In The Swimming Pool, the character played by Romy Schneider wears several swimsuits, but all of them are either black or white. The color palette was supposed to highlight the elegance of the character. The most memorable suit was the dark bikini with straps around her neck that she wears right at the start of the film.
Cristina — Madly in Love (1981)
The princess, portrayed by Ornella Muti, chose a white swimsuit with a black edge. The simple design with the open back makes the suit spectacular. It’s not surprising that the main character was madly in love with her.
C.J. — Baywatch (1989)
Pamela Anderson’s beach look in Baywatch is familiar even to people that have never seen the show. And it’s because the red one-piece swimsuit with the high cut leg became incredibly popular. It still looks amazing and attracts a lot of attention.
Nicole — Fear (1996)
The character of Reese Witherspoon in Fear is a romantic girl. The 2-piece suit with white embroidery highlights her fragility and naïveté. The costume designers definitely put a certain meaning into that suit.
Marge — The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)
The film is set in the middle of the previous century, and the character of Gwyneth Paltrow wears a swimsuit in the spirit of that time. The bra has lace and the shorts are high-rise. Fashion experts say that even today, her look is quite trendy: retro swimsuits still look amazing.
Lara — Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003)
When you look at the swimsuit of Angelina Jolie from Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, there’s only one word that comes to mind — “practical.” She can easily move in this suit because the wide straps make it very comfortable.
Madison — Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle (2003)
The villain portrayed by Demi Moore shocked viewers of Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle when she appeared on-screen in a knitted suit. The suit allowed the actress to create the unforgettable look of a surfer.
Allie — The Notebook (2004)
The romantic film is set in the 1940s, so she’s wearing a swimsuit that was trendy at that time. To us today, it looks like a summer costume with a top and skirt, but in the middle of the previous century, it looked quite bold.
Cecilia — Atonement (2007)
The swimsuit for Keira Knightley’s character was made in the 1930s style — the time when the film is set. The silhouette of the swimsuits of the time was inspired by male swimsuits and the main feature was the belt. If you look closely, you will see she’s also wearing a narrow belt that is the same color as the suit.
Sophie — Magic in the Moonlight (2014)
In the ’20s, female swimsuits were a dress with shorts underneath, and they were made of wool. Emma Stone’s character is probably wearing something similar.
Midge — The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2017)
A female comedian from the 1950s, portrayed by Rachel Brosnahan, wore a polka-dot swimsuit on the lake. The cone-shaped bra cups reflect the spirit of the ’50s. The costume designers deserve all the praise they can get for their attention to detail.
Maddy — Euphoria (2019)
Alexa Demie’s character is the star of the school. She prefers bright clothes that make her look special. Maddy stays true to herself when she goes to the beach. Her black swimsuit with ripe cherries looks marvelous.
