Drew Barrymore Proudly Embraces Aging and Speaks Up Against Plastic Surgery
These days, plastic surgery has become the norm for most stars. Sometimes, it becomes hard to differentiate between what’s real and what’s not, but some famous people have spoken up against the dangers of plastic surgery. Drew Barrymore has been very vocal about why she is opposed to cosmetic procedures and has publicly shared her thoughts about it.
Drew Barrymore opened up about the pressure to look young for women.
The 47-year-old actress, who started acting when she was as young as 5, has talked extensively about the dangers of plastic surgery and why she would never get it done. On her show, The Drew Barrymore Show, she opened up about how women in Hollywood feel increasingly pressured to look younger and go under the knife.
She resisted the pressure her entire career.
“I’m raising 2 daughters, and we were raised in an industry where it was desired to drink of the fountain of youth, and I just never subscribed to it,” said Barrymore while talking about the pressure she got throughout her career. “I think because I’m so rebellious that I saw all of that pressure, and I saw all of those women torturing themselves to look a certain way and I thought, ’You miserable people.’”
She feels that this pressure has impacted many of her peers.
While talking to Jamie Lee Curtis on her show, Drew Barrymore further explained her resistance to the trend of getting surgical procedures done. “I don’t want to fight nature,” she said. After seeing many of her peers in Hollywood fall into the societal pressure of plastic surgery, Barrymore decided she wanted to go in the opposite direction instead.
She believes aging naturally is a blessing.
Despite saying “never say never” to her decision of avoiding plastic surgery, the actress went on to talk about why aging shouldn’t be viewed in a negative light, claiming, “I just never wanted to be afraid of what life would do to me. I would love it if there was some way we could let go and give in to the ride of life a little bit more.”
For Barrymore, plastic surgery is a “slippery slope” she wants to avoid.
In a 2019 interview, the actress explained that plastic surgery was a “slippery slope” she wanted to avoid at all costs. “Not messing with my face or chasing some unnatural beauty is a standard I live by,” she declared. After having children, her stance on aging became even more firm, as she said, “I feel aging is a privilege.”
“We’re going to age.”
Drew Barrymore’s perspective on aging has helped her avoid getting any surgery done. “We’re going to age, things are going to go south, and it’s okay, it’s a part of life,” she said. “I feel more human and more vulnerable every year of my life, but I also know how to appreciate every year more and more, too.”
