Uma Thurman’s Parenthood Journey Is Something Most Parents Can Relate to, and the Struggle Is Real

Research shows that 92% of working moms and 89% of stay-at-home moms feel overwhelmed by work, home, and, most importantly, parenting responsibilities. But imagine that in addition to being a mom you are also an actor, model, film producer, screenwriter, and television producer all at the same time, like Uma Thurman.

Uma Thurman felt there was a missing piece in her life.

While filming The Avengers, Uma Thurman, who was 28 at that time, felt something was not right. She came back home and started rethinking her life. She needed something different, and at that moment, she said to herself, “I am going to have a baby,” as was reported to the press.

Thurman says a family-career balance is not possible.

Thurman admitted that she doesn’t believe in having a balanced life. To her, finding time between a husband, kids, a career, and a social life was more like a mission impossible. Thurman added, “I couldn’t live with myself if I ruined or damaged my kids.” She simply felt guilty and afraid, both about working and not working at the same time.

She had to choose between kids and a career.

In the late 1990s, Thurman gave birth to her daughter, Maya, who is now 24 years old, and later to her son, Levon, who is now 20 years old. During this time, she took a 4-year hiatus, taking on only a few small, low-budget projects in order to take care of her kids. “I probably very much shortchanged my career when I did that, but it was worth it,” the actress said. But she would never regret this, as she formed a wonderful relationship with her kids.

She had to take a break from her career.

Uma Thurman, again, in 2012, reported that she would be away from the big screen because she was pregnant with her third child, Luna, who is 10 years old today. The father, her fiancé, financier Arpad Busson, also has 2 children from a previous marriage.

She ended up giving her child 5 different names. So to the family, she is known as Luna, however, her real name is Rosalind Arusha Arkadina Altalune Florence Thurman-Busson. It was the idea of her daughter, Maya, for Thurman to give her youngest child all the names that she liked because she likely wouldn’t have any more kids.

Thurman’s greatest fear is raising kids in poverty.

For Thurman, one of her biggest concerns in life was living in poverty, and more specifically, having her children suffer from it. “It’s undebatably unjust for children to suffer,” she said. And becoming a mom herself allowed her to see closely how frightening and overwhelming facing motherhood without a job, resources, or support would be.

That’s why Thurman has become one of the founding board members of Room to Grow, an organization that helps poor parents get access to necessary care for their children and provide them with a better life.

Thurman changed her perspective on stress and found a way to cope.

When it comes to stress, Thurman has a full plate, for sure. She admitted that she handles stress “pretty badly,” however, nowadays, Thurman is trying a new approach to dealing with stress by replacing the words, “I am stressed,” with “I am concerned.” And this has turned out really well for her.

For Thurman, other ways of easing pressure are exploring nature, reading, and, of course, her work in Room to Grow. Uma Thurman advises, “Just do your best. Any working mother will tell you it’s the same. I think every working mom is kind of a superhero. I think we all are.”

What her kids are doing now

The youngest of all 3 kids, Luna Thurman-Busson, is just 10 years old now, but the older kids, Levon Thurman-Hawke (20 years) and Maya Hawke (24 years), already followed in their mother’s footsteps. Maya has already appeared in a number of productions, like Little Women and Stranger Things, and has an interest in fashion. Her brother also has an interest in acting and has appeared in several fashion shows.

So, what do you think? Is Uma Thurman, right? Are we torturing ourselves with this mythical idea of a “balanced” life? Let us what you think in the comment section below.
