8 Skincare Tips You Might’ve Tried, That May Be Bad for You

Some beauty tips seem to be so well-known that we tend to believe that they’re true because basically everyone knows about them. Just in case you decide to test any of them by yourself, you might come to the conclusion that the trick just doesn’t work, and it can even cause you some harm which might make you wonder how you even believed that in the first place.

To help your skin get rid of some future conditions, Bright Side prepared this list of tips that might not go as expected.

1. Using a lot of different products in a short amount of time

Everyone has already seen skincare routines on the internet that require a lot of different products, for different purposes, all at the same time on your face. It may seem like you’re taking good care of your skin this way, but adding layers and layers of products isn’t necessary, as your face can’t absorb everything at once. This can actually cause some issues like clogged pores and dryness.

2. Toothpaste can heal pimples.

This tip might seem like is true, as toothpaste has some drying ingredients, like baking soda, that can help the zit shrink a bit, but it’s not worth the work. Toothpaste is made for our teeth, and while it is very effective at cleaning them, it’s too strong to use on your face, as it can lead to rashes on your skin.

3. People with oily skin don’t need to use moisturizer.

If you have oily skin, you might believe that you actually need a product to dry it out instead of making it more oily. In fact, moisturizers are for holding the water in the outer layer of your skin to keep it hydrated instead of adding more water. With this in mind, if you have oily skin, you can invest in “oil-free” or “non-comedogenic” products that are less likely to clog your pores, as hydration is not just about oil and fat-based products.

4. You should shave against the grain.

While shaving against the grain can help you get much closer to the skin, it also pulls the hair away before it can be cut, which can make you get more ingrown hairs and razor bumps. With that said, the best and safer option is going with the grain.

5. Butter heals burns.

When you put something greasy on a burn like butter, it slows the release of heat from the skin, which actually is bad as the heat gets retained. The best way to treat it in these cases is using cool water. Ice and ice water are also too much for the skin, and it’s better to avoid as well.

6. You shouldn’t pop a pimple.

If you’re doing it the correct way, popping a pimple can actually help it go away faster, as it releases the pressure and frees the substance sitting inside. Choose a time when the zit begins to look and feel slightly swollen, with its contents ready to be released, and be as gentle as possible.

7. Washing your face with hot water will open up the pores for a better clean.

While the steam of a hot bath can help open up the pores, taking a shower in hot water can strip off its natural, protective barrier — drying it out. The best alternative is to check the water temperature to make sure it’s not too hot, as the hot steam might not compensate for the redness and dryness in the end.

8. The harder the exfoliation, the cleaner your skin gets.

You might believe that if you scrub your face hard enough, all the unwanted substances and dead cells will come off, leaving your face fresh and beautiful. In reality, exfoliation is a process that should be gentle, as the skin can renovate itself on its own, and it doesn’t require an external agent to do so. Scrubbing too hard can be bad to your skin, and even increase wrinkles.

Have you ever tried any of these hacks? What were the end results? We would like to know in the comments.
