Danny DeVito and His Wife Refuse to Get Divorced Even After Splitting Up, Proving Family Is Far Beyond Any Conventions

Dany DeVito and his wife, Rhea Perlman, separated after spending more than 3 decades together. Though, they haven’t even thought about getting an official divorce. While it may seem unusual, the 2 of them feel super comfortable in the new relationships they’ve built. And they prove that family ties go beyond all conventions.

It was love at first sight.

Danny and Rhea met several decades ago, in 1971, after the Broadway show DeVito was starring in. Rhea came to see the show. She stayed after, and they went to grab something to eat.

“We were instant,” Perlman recalled. “We spent all night talking,” DeVito remembered. “And finally, I asked her for her phone number, and it was a Brooklyn number. So that cinched it, right there.”

They built a loving family together.

The couple built their own happily ever after, just like in a fairytale. They spent time together at home and on screen. Danny and Rhea worked together on movies like Taxi and Matilda. However, their biggest achievement was their 3 children — 2 daughters, Lucy and Grace, and a son, Jake.

The famous couple tried to keep their children away from unwanted attention. “They were really good about keeping our home really solid and safe,” recalled Jake. “I always feel like we always were more just excited about being at home with our friends and in our community.”

They separated but never got divorced.

Danny and Rhea first separated in 2012, but reconciled in 2013. They lived together for 4 more years, just to get separated again in 2017. And even though their relationship has been off and on, they never even considered getting an official divorce. “I’m not getting divorced,” says Rhea. “That’s not in the picture... what for?”

The couple lives separately. Though, they see each other often and spend time together. “Danny and I have always loved each other, and we have 3 amazing children together, and we really agree on almost everything important, and so, you know, we were together for 40 years,” recalls Rhea.

They found peace in the new format of their relationship.

Both Danny and Rhea feel completely comfortable in the new format of their relationship, even though the change has not been smooth. “It’s much better [now] because all the tense stuff is gone,” said Rhea. “It’s not in your face. I’m not in his face. He’s not in mine.”

“There was a hard transition through the kids and everything, but everybody’s got a good relationship with Danny and with me and with each other, and that’s all we care about,” Rhea recalled.

What do you think about the unusual relationship between Danny and Rhea?
