12 People Whose Guests Really Tested Their Patience

Receiving guests is an art that requires tact, humor and sometimes strong nerves. We put together stories about the hosts and those who came to visit them, and they turned out to be real adventures for both parties.

  • I’ve been dating a girl for 6 months. She was at my place, but for some reason she never invited me to hers. Then I found out where she lived and showed up at her place.
I wish I hadn’t! She’s got all these herbs and weird dolls and stuff. It’s like finding yourself inside a horror movie. © Overheard / Ideer
  • Recently, my younger brother came to visit me. He didn’t come alone, but with his girlfriend — to get acquainted. They came with a cake, we sat down to drink some tea.
So, we chat, laugh, the atmosphere is good. I ask, “Tea or coffee?” The girl smiles sweetly, “Tea... With milk.” Okay, I grab a carton of milk and brew a regular black tea bag.
And she looks at it like I’m pouring dirt into her cup, and she’s like, “Oh no, I only drink loose-leaf tea and plant-based milk.” So here I am, sitting with a plain milk carton and a tea bag in my hands, thinking: where did my brother dig up this aristocrat?! © Caramel / VK
  • I bought a flat by the sea to rent it out. I told my aunt about it, and she told the whole family. My relatives decided to surprise me and dropped in uninvited. I told them, “It’s great that you came! I’ve got some free dates, you owe me so much for a week.”
The whole neighborhood heard their screams that I’m a mercantile niece, ungrateful and bad. They rented a nice, expensive hotel right across the street and sent me pictures to show that they were doing well without me. © Overheard / Ideer

I used to think I could never earn more than what my previous employer paid me — but I was wrong. The world is full of opportunities for those willing to take a chance.

Now, I’m earning $52 per hour or more, and I can easily make at least $1,300 a week. Based on my experience, I believe everyone should try working online — it’s a simple and flexible way to earn money. Here's an example:

  • I invited a friend and her husband over. Then she goes out for a minute, and her husband says to me, “When you get divorced, I’ll be waiting for you!” I almost choked and asked, “Are you okay?” He smirks, “Come on, it’s always a good idea to have a plan B.”
I’m stunned, my friend walks in like nothing happened, and now I don’t know how to tell her. Strange people! If he was joking, the joke didn’t work out. © Caramel / VK
  • My sister-in-law opted for a tent wedding and no heaters in winter in the Midwest. They decided the generator was needed for music, not heat.

  • Today I came over to my sister, her daughter turned 4 years old. I brought a cake, money in an envelope. My niece was a grump the whole time, keeping to herself.
At one fine moment, a whiny little voice came from behind the door, “They should leave! They didn’t even bring me a doll!” I’m all for practical gifts — better to give money, so the mom can buy clothes or toys the kid actually likes, than to guess the size wrong or buy something they won’t want.
I get that kids can be picky sometimes, but back in my day, my mom would’ve seriously scolded me for acting like that toward guests. © Overheard / Ideer
  • Whenever we visit my mother-in-law from another city, we’re always met with an empty fridge and a surprised look on her face: “Oh... you’re already here?!” So we always bring food with us. A ton of food. As much as we can carry. © Pohjoinen nainen / ADME
  • I was super nervous before meeting my boyfriend’s mom. I’d heard she was a tough woman with a steel character. So, I decided to surprise her.
I spent the whole day making a cake — baking the layers, preparing several fillings, and the frosting. Never spent that much time by the oven before.
When we got there, his mom was pretty reserved at first. Then she asked about me, tried the cake, and said, “Alright, you can’t cook. No worries, I’ll teach you. Better tell me about your education.” © Caramel / VK
  • My pregnant friend got into a habit of coming over and raiding my fridge. I’ve figured that out long ago, so I always make sure there’s something healthy and tasty in there — gotta think about the future baby!
At some point, I decided to load it up with even more healthy stuff. She noticed it and said, “Listen, why do you only have spinach and apples here? Do you know why I love coming to your place? Because my husband fills our fridge with only healthy stuff — no real food. But you had real food!”
It was pretty funny. I promised to bring back the pastries and cheese — but spinach and apples can stay, too. © Caramel / VK
  • I once came to visit a guy with whom we had agreed to study for exams together, and some woman was cleaning his flat. She immediately apologized and left, and the guy explained, “That’s my cook and cleaner.” I thought it was a bit odd, but I didn’t think much of it.
I only remembered the incident at the graduation because the cook and cleaner was actually his mom who was sitting in the audience. © Caramel / VK
  • One day my boyfriend, whom I came to visit, dumped some groceries on the table and asked me to cook something because he was tired (he was moving from one dorm to another that day, I was helping by carrying his things despite my sore back). After tasting what I cooked, he said, “I expected more from a girl...” And all my love for him vanished like a dream before dawn. © Overheard / Ideer
  • I rent a flat, live alone, and am currently working and studying to support myself. Until a few months ago I had a boyfriend, I loved him, I thought he loved me too. One evening he came to my place, looked into the fridge and found only a piece of butter and cucumbers. He got upset, said that I couldn’t even feed my man.
A week later, we broke up. He knew my situation perfectly well, but instead of helping me, he turned his back on me and left me. It’s great that he showed his real self. Even though I’m alone, it’s better than having a weirdo by my side. © Caramel / VK
