If you are not into horticulture and don’t know all the types of trees in your garden, don’t get upset. The Internet is always there to help us — it’s full of numerous experts who are ready to find the right name for an unknown plant and even explain how to take care of it.

“This came off a tree. There are tons of these floating around. What is it?”

“What is this and how do I stop it from popping up everywhere?”

  • It’s smilax, or greenbrier. It’s a tough plant that’s hard to control because it has a large and robust root system. The best you can do is patrol the area you want to rid of it every week and pull any sprouts all summer, getting as much root as possible. The aim is to exhaust the store of nutrients in the roots and start poisoning it after. © TitaniumTadpole / Reddit

“What is this?”

“What are these little cuties?”

“I found these in my yard today and they smell sweet. Do any of you know what they are?”

“Any idea what this conifer is?”

“What plant is this? I bought a pack of broccoli but I don’t think this is broccoli.”

“I was out mushroom hunting and found this. What is this?”

“What fruiting plant is this?”

“What is this please? It’s growing in my garden.”

“An insanely nice smelling tree — what is this?”

“Seen at a botanical garden but couldn’t find a label. Any ideas?”

“What is this gorgeous specimen?”

“This popped up in my backyard a few weeks ago. What is it? It’s almost the size of a watermelon.”

“These smell so wonderful, even from afar. What are these flowers?”

“Can you help me identify this fast-spreading plant in my yard?”

“I’m wondering what this vine is that’s growing on my fence.”

“I think it’s a weed, Dad thinks it’s corn.”

“What is this beauty? Found in Northern VA, it sprouted from nowhere around April 5–12. It’s the only one I’ve ever seen.”

Bleeding hearts! One of my favorite flowers. Yes, they are poisonous. Samwood_writing / Reddit

Bonus:

Lips or plants?

Conophytum pageae, also known as the Lips or Button plant, is a compact succulent native to South Africa. Its small, fleshy leaves are pinky-red and resemble human lips, and it produces daisy-like petals during the growing season.

White baneberry or doll’s-eyes

This plant is dangerous for people to eat or touch. The whole plant, including the berries, is poisonous. The berries have toxins that can quickly make your heart slow down and stop working properly, which can be very dangerous. So it’s important to stay away from this plant and not eat or touch any part of it.

Devil’s tooth

In some parts of North America and Europe, you may find a strange-looking fungus called the Devil’s Tooth. It has large, red, tooth-like structures that look like they are bleeding.

In this internet era, everything can be explained in a snap, even the most magical plants. Those that have been growing in your backyard are no longer a mystery, and maybe you will find out how to nurture them.
