During an interview on “Good Morning America”, Dana Reeve recounted her experience at a late-night cabaret, where actors performed after hours. At this lively and spirited event, she took the stage and performed “The Music That Makes Me Dance.” As fate would have it, a friend of hers, seated near Christopher Reeve, later mentioned, “I knew the definition of thunderstruck” as they watched Dana’s performance.

Mr. Reeves narrates a deeply affectionate and romantic relationship. They exchanged vows in 1992, and in that same year, they welcomed their son, Will, into the world. Three years of joy and contentment followed, until the life-altering accident occurred.

His hobby became a reason for a tragedy.

On the 27th of May 1995, a momentous event reshaped the lives of Christopher and Dana Reeve, prompting profound reflections on their life choices. The renowned Superman actor encountered a harrowing incident during an equestrian riding competition in Culpeper, Virginia.

Christopher Reeve’s fascination with horses had initially begun when he acquired the fundamental skills for the 1985 movie Anna Karenina. It was during a competition held in that very year when Reeve, mounted on his horse named Buck, faced the challenge of navigating a course filled with various obstacles. While he exhibited confidence as he and his horse Buck cleared the initial obstacles with grace, an unsettling moment occurred when the horse hesitated before attempting the third jump. What unfolded in the moments that followed sent a collective shiver down the spines of all who witnessed it.

Christopher Reeve and his trusty horse were confronted with a formidable 3-foot fence shaped like a ’W.’ However, an abrupt halt by the horse before the third jump led to Reeve’s involuntary forward lurch over the horse’s head, with his arm entangled in the bridle. This unfortunate sequence of events resulted in Reeve falling to the opposite side of the fence, losing consciousness in the process.

Subsequently, Christopher Reeve was swiftly transported to the University of Virginia Medical Center, where he regained consciousness after spending five days in the intensive care unit. Tragically, his condition remained critical due to the severe injury, involving the fracture of two top vertebrae in his spinal cord.

She never left him.

In his published book, he discloses, for the very first time, the severe extent of his injuries, revealing how his mother implored his medical team to discontinue life support. However, he remained strong, thanks to the profound support and encouragement from his wife, Dana. Her heartfelt words were a turning point: ’’I will support whatever you want to do, because this is your life and your decision. But I want you to know that I’ll be with you.’’

Furthermore, he recalled that she uttered the words that became his lifeline: “You’re still you. And I love you.”

Dana, a driven and dedicated individual, made the selfless choice to leave her acting and singing career behind to provide care for her husband. Each day, it required the assistance of two attendants to help him get up in the morning and an additional two to prepare for bedtime.

In the company of Dana and their 5-year-old son, Will, Mr. Reeve was in pursuit of a regular family life. Dana shared their approach: “We decided I must be his wife and not his nurse.” She occasionally assisted with his hair shampoo, as it was an intimate and loving act. There were moments when he felt low, hitting rock bottom. She simply lent a listening ear and strived to find ways to offer support. Close connection played a crucial role in this process.

Dana and Reeve attended the event, where he had the honor of presenting Robin Williams with an award for his outstanding charitable efforts. The stage was surrounded by a cheering crowd of 700 people, and when Reeve took to the stage, he received a heartwarming standing ovation.

Reeve’s strength began to make a triumphant return, and he achieved the remarkable milestone of breathing unaided once again. With renewed determination, Reeve embraced a positive perspective towards his health challenges. In a powerful display of resilience, he graced the 1996 Academy Awards in a wheelchair, becoming an inspiration to millions. Truly, he embodied the spirit of a real-life Superman!

When Christopher suffered an injury, Dana faced the challenge of finding her way through a vast sea of information while embarking on the journey of adapting to their transformed life. As her husband fought tenaciously for recovery, Dana’s deep desire was to establish a strong support network for those individuals, families, and caregivers who found themselves impacted by paralysis.

Dana Reeve, as a founding board member of the Christopher Reeve Foundation, took up the mantle of leadership in 2004, succeeding her late husband, Christopher Reeve, as the Chair of the Board of Directors.

Dana devoted her life to charitable work in assisting paralyzed people.

Her unwavering commitment and exceptional contributions earned her a series of prestigious accolades, including the Shining Example Award from Proctor & Gamble in 1998 and the American Image Award from the AAFA in 2003. Furthermore, the American Cancer Society honored her with the title of “Mother of the Year” in 2005. Dana also penned the moving book “Care Packages,” which comprises heartfelt letters and notes from friends, community members, and admirers to the Reeve family in the wake of Christopher’s injury. This touching compilation was published by Random House in 1999.

Chris passed away in 2004 from heart failure at the age of 52, and will forever be remembered as Superman. A mere 17 months after her husband’s passing, Dana succumbed to lung cancer.

True love is a profound and enduring connection that transcends the trials and tribulations of life. It’s a bond that weathers storms and emerges even stronger, built on trust, respect, and unwavering affection. This love goes beyond the surface, delving deep into the soul, where flaws and imperfections are not just accepted but cherished.
