85-Year-Old Grandma Cycled 1000 Miles and Set World Record for Heartbreaking Reason
Mavis Patterson is an 85-year-old grandmother from Galloway, Scotland. She spent her 85th birthday cycling 1000 miles in memory of her 3 late children, all of whom passed away within 4 years of each other. This tragedy motivated her to cycle across the country and simultaneously raise £60,000 for cancer research.
Meet Mavis Patterson, an 85-year-old from Scotland.
Mavis Patterson, who is also known to her many internet fans as Granny Mave, is a local from Galloway, Scotland. She has been involved in fundraising for Macmillan Cancer Support for 20 years, raising money for the center following the loss of her mother and younger sister to cancer. She initially had a love for running but had to switch to cycling in her fifties due to health concerns.
Mavis is no stranger to grueling physical challenges. The 85-year-old has cycled across Canada and America, and has climbed Kilimanjaro. In 2019, she completed a 960-mile cycle challenge and became the oldest woman to cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats. This achievement secured her a Guinness World Record while also raising £75,000 for cancer research.
She cycled 1000 miles across Scotland in memory of her late children.
Mavis faced a great tragedy that inspired her to take up this challenge in the first place. In 2012, she lost a son to a heart attack, and shortly after, in 2013, her daughter passed away from pneumonia. In 2016, her third son would also sadly die in an accident.
All 3 of her children were in their 40s. “When my children died, I just didn’t know what to do. But the cycling has helped me a lot,” Mavis said.
“I do think about them a lot, but I’ve got to face life, so I take on the challenges which are a huge help to me. The last one I did was wonderful because it took my mind off of the children.” Cycling has become a way to cope with her grief and is “therapeutic” for Mavis, and the memory of her late children inspired her to achieve her biggest goal yet.
She ended up raising £60,000 for cancer research.
Mavis began her cycling journey in the Mull of Galloway and was met at the finishing line by cheering fans and her grandchild, who embraced her. Her fundraising provided around £60,000 for Macmillan.
According to a spokesperson for the center, Mavis’ efforts have made a massive difference for the charity. “I know getting out on her bike helps her both physically and mentally, however, it takes a huge amount of determination to achieve what she has.”
“I thought this is grief that I’ll never... get over,” said Mavis in a video. “To lose all my children was the saddest thing that could happen to me.”
However, setting challenges for herself has helped her deal with her loss in a healthy way. “When I am cycling, I don’t think about them so much,” she said, “which is a big help to me.” Mavis continues to involve herself in fundraising for charity and challenging herself in new ways.
Stories of people who achieve incredible feats despite any odds stacked against them help us all wonder what we could do if we put our minds to it. This incredible story of a man born without limbs who raised his daughters by himself is a great example.
