A man who made millions of people around the world laugh with his character on the iconic show, Friends, has now made everyone cry with his sudden passing. The famous American actor, best known for playing Chandler Bing on the hit ’90s TV show, Friends, was found dead at his Los Angeles home. He was discovered unresponsive in his hot tub, leaving a big hole in the hearts of those who loved him and will remember him fondly.

Despite his huge fame during Friends’ heyday, a show that had a massive impact on sitcom history and influenced many generations, Matthew Perry’s life wasn’t always easy. He dealt with a lot of problems over the past few years.

We all remember the iconic Chandler Bing from the sitcom on which he played a funny, nice guy who was always in a good mood. But real life can be more complicated, and in November 2022, the actor released his heartbreaking memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, which served as a very personal confession of the hardest days of his life.

In his memoir, Perry opened up about a time a few years back when he was on the brink of losing his life. He honestly revealed his struggle with a gastrointestinal perforation. Moreover, he didn’t hold back in discussing his battle with addiction, which had a significant impact on his performance on Friends.

“I couldn’t quit because the disease and the addiction keep progressing, worsening as you get older,”
the actor confessed.

Everyone can find themselves in dark moments, grappling with emotional turmoil and feeling trapped. However, there is a path to change, and it’s within your power to improve your life. “That disease doesn’t discriminate. It doesn’t matter if you’re successful or not,” he declared.

Colleagues, friends, and fans mourned the actor.

Following the unexpected passing of Matthew Perry, an outpouring of reactions and tributes have swept through the Friends community, including his former co-stars, who have flooded social media with heartfelt messages celebrating Perry’s life and his lasting impact, both on and off-screen.

Fans and colleagues of Perry’s came together on social media to honor the actor, fondly recalling his acting prowess and kindness. The official Facebook page of the show expressed their condolences, saying, “He was a true gift to us all. Our heart goes out to his family, loved ones, and all of his fans.”

NBC, which aired Friends from 1994 to 2004, wrote on Facebook that Perry “brought so much joy to hundreds of millions of people around the world with his pitch-perfect comedic timing and wry wit.”

Many of Matthew Perry’s former co-stars turned to social media to express their sorrow and sadness. Maggie Wheeler, who played Chandler Bing’s recurring love interest, Janice, and Morgan Fairchild, who portrayed Chandler’s mother, were among the first to share their feelings when the news of his passing broke on Saturday.

“What a loss,” Wheeler wrote on Instagram. “The world will miss you. The joy you brought to so many in your too-short lifetime will live on. I feel so very blessed by every creative moment we shared.”

Fans of Friends united not only to mourn Matthew Perry as an actor but also as a cherished “family” member on that sorrowful Sunday.

The morning following the celebrated actor’s tragic passing at the age of 54, countless admirers from around the world braved the rainy weather of New York City to pay their respects at the apartment building where Perry’s character, Chandler Bing, resided on the show. Along the streetlight at the building’s corner, Perry’s life was commemorated with bouquets of flowers and heartfelt handwritten notes.

He posted one final eerie photo that surprised many.

After Friends, Perry’s career never witnessed the same high as it had when he was working on the show. Sure, he was part of several shows, like Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, The Odd Couple, and films, like The Triumph (for which he earned Golden Globe and Emmy nominations), but none got him that stardom that he had once seen while on Friends.

However, many continued to love him and follow him on social media where he’d randomly share moments and highlights of his life, like one of his last posts, in which he stood alongside his father, a very poignant and touching picture. Perry loved sharing little crumbles of his life, and his last photo in particular left many speechless.

Just 6 days before his tragic drowning, Perry posted a picture on Instagram of himself chilling in a hot tub. It was reported that the police found him unresponsive in a hot tub at his Los Angeles-area home around 4 p.m.

In his October 23, 2023, Instagram post, Perry can be seen in the hot tub, wearing headphones and taking in the view. Perry captioned his post, “Oh, so warm water swirling around makes you feel good? I’m Mattman.” Many saw this photo as an eerie foreshadowing of his death, leaving everyone speechless. Someone wrote, “6 days ago you posted this, and this is where you post your life today. So freaky.” Someone else wrote, “This post is just so spooky knowing what happened right there.”

Although we don’t have all the details about his passing, one thing is certain: Matthew Perry and Chandler Bing will always be cherished, and we’ll forever “be there for him.”

Even though he’s no longer with us, we’re now embracing the amazing person Matthew Perry was. Just like he did when he shared his true life story, he still manages to touch everyone’s hearts.
