’Woman of the Year’ Shakira Delivers Strong Personal Speech Addressing Her Painful Split
Shakira’s recent difficult breakup has prompted her to deeply reflect on various aspects of her life. This awareness is evident in her public expressions. At the Latin Women in Music gala, the 46-year-old singer was not only recognized for her accomplishments but also received a standing ovation for her powerful speech.
Shakira became the Woman of the Year.
Shakira was recently awarded the Woman of the Year title by Billboard magazine. Upon receiving the award, she dedicated it to her mother acknowledging the difficulties she had faced in the past year, including separation from her daughter, hospitalizations of her husband, and her own health problems.
On stage, Shakira expressed her deep affection for her mother, calling her the woman of the year in her eyes. Despite the challenges she faced, Shakira praised her mother’s boundless love and resilience, emphasizing the strength and perseverance that she had shown.
She shaded her ex-husband in her acceptance speech.
Referring to her breakup with Gerard Piqué, the father of her children and longtime partner, Shakira said: “It doesn’t matter so much if someone is faithful or not; what really matters is if you continue to be faithful to yourself”. The couple parted ways last year after being together for almost 12 years, amidst rumors of infidelity on Piqué’s part. He subsequently went public with his new girlfriend, while Shakira channelled her feelings into three successful chart-topping hits about the split.
“There comes a time in every woman’s life when she no longer depends on someone to love or accept herself as she is. The search for the other is replaced by the search for oneself when the desire to be perfect is replaced by the desire to be authentic,” Shakira continued in her speech.
The singer paid tribute to all women.
Shakira spoke about the strength and resilience of women, and how she has come to realize that women are capable of much more than they are often taught. She continued in her speech, “Women are much stronger than we think. We are braver than we think we are. I think we are also more independent than we were taught to be.”
Shakira revealed that during the times when she felt most lost, it was music that helped her find her way back to herself. She then paid tribute to women saying: “For them, for you, I wrote what I wrote, I sang what I sang because only a woman can love to the point of tearing herself apart”.
It’s great that after the painful split, Shakira didn’t get disappointed by the relationships and marriage and is now reportedly hanging out with another man. Recently she and Tom Cruz were spotted together and, who knows, maybe we will see them as a couple in the nearest future.
