10 Celebrities Who Refuse to Raise Materialistic and Spoiled Kids

Being born with a silver spoon sounds like a dream. But in the long run, the privilege of coming from money can turn into our biggest misfortune. Because having everything we wish for by default deprives us of the euphoria we get after achieving things ourselves. And no one understands this better than those stars who have worked hard to reach their level of success. And this is why many of them are determined to make their kids follow the path of perseverance rather than luxury.

Bright Side admires those celebrities who never forget where they came from and who know the real value of being a self-made person. We want to share some stars with you who are showing their kids that discipline and hard work are the way to success.

Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick

Parker and Broderick are parents to a boy and 2 girls. The 57-year-old actress was raised in a hard-working average family, and revealed that she was never spoiled and even ’’starved for attention’’ as a child.

And even though her reality has changed a lot now, Parker had once opened up in an interview saying that her son ’’only wears hand-me-downs’’ from older nephews. She further explained, ’’I don’t think I’ve ever bought him any clothes. [...] I do buy him shoes, because everybody’s feet are different.’’

Julia Roberts and Daniel Moder

Married for 20 years now, the famous actress and her husband have 3 children. Roberts revealed her approach to parenting, and noted that “nothing is ’stronger than gentleness.’”

She explained, “I think some people confuse unconditional love with spoiling.” She then made it clear that this is not the case in her own household, saying, “None of my kids would think I have a problem with that distinction.”

Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis

Kutcher and Kunis “both came from pretty solid poverty backgrounds and grew up very poor.” And it seems that they are super careful to not spoil their 2 children now that they have the means.

The actress explained that their parenting philosophy is to explain to their kids from early on that, “Mommy and Daddy may have a dollar, but you’re poor.” Adding, “You are very poor, you have nothing. Mommy and Daddy have a bank account.”

Bill Gates

He might be one of the richest men on the planet, but Bill Gates is determined to not shower his kids with his fortune. He believes that children who inherit large amounts of money and do not work for it likely won’t do well in the future. Therefore, his kids will end up with a relatively small part of his massive inheritance in order to avoid the possibility of “doing nothing” in the future.

Sting

The 70-year-old famous singer is one of the wealthiest people in the British music industry. Nevertheless, he declared, “I certainly don’t want to leave them trust funds that are albatrosses round their necks.” He explained that the reason for this decision is to make his children work. He added, “All my kids rarely ask me for anything, which I really respect and appreciate.”

Marie Osmond

The 62-year-old singer revealed that none of the money she’s made over her lifetime will be left to her children. She explained that by leaving them an inheritance, “you take away the one most important gifts you can give your children, and that’s the ability to work.”

Gordon Ramsay

The 55-year-old star chef and TV personality who has 5 children categorically refuses to spoil them. He revealed that he does not allow his kids to eat at his fancy restaurants and believes that they should work for their pocket money. He even admitted to making them fly economy, by explaining, “They don’t sit with us in first class. They haven’t worked anywhere near hard enough to afford that.”

Simon Cowell

The 62-year-old successful TV personality and entrepreneur who has an 8-year-old boy noted, “I don’t believe in passing on from one generation to another.” He explained, “I’m going to leave my money to somebody. A charity, probably—kids and dogs.”

Elton John

Elton John and his husband are the parents of 9-year-old twin boys. And even though he is one of the musical legends of our era, Elton John revealed that his kids won’t be basking in his fortune. He explained, “Anything beyond the basic, they have to go out and earn it themselves.”

Furthermore, the musician revealed that having children changed his views on life. He said, “I’ve learned that the simplest things in life — like having a minute with them — are worth more than any painting, any photograph, any house, or any hit record.”

Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan

The media magnate who is worth billions of dollars and his wife have 2 girls and are undoubtedly one of the most powerful couples. Nonetheless, this duo has revealed that they will donate 99% of their Facebook shares over their lifetime. They explained that their goal is to “improve the lives of all those coming into this world, not just those already here.”
